PRB for PRT

I’m a 4/C MIDN on scholarship and failed my official PRT run portion by 9 seconds, failing is still failing. I may have a PRB if I cannot retake the test, any insight on how these work or what to do. I’m not nervous because I’m accountable for what I’ve done and will fix it before the next cycle.

Assume you've already put up a "Bad Day" chit--if not, look into that.

ROD section 3-20 has some guidance: https://www.netc.navy.mil/Portals/46/NSTC/cmd-docs/manuals/NSTC M-1533.2D Regulations for Officer Development v18 Final.pdf
Appendix B: https://www.netc.navy.mil/Portals/4...ndx/Appendix B NSTC M-1533.2D NOV 2019 v2.pdf
Appendix F: https://www.netc.navy.mil/Portals/46/NSTC/cmd-docs/manuals/appndx/Appendix F NSTC M-1533.2D NOV 2019 v2.pdf

Your unit probably has its own procedures--check with an upperclassman if you can't find a posted SOP/instruction.

This is your first time, you're a 4/C, and you're willing to own up to your shortcomings. I think something like disenrollment is extreme for this situation, and you'll be okay. Do fix it before next cycle; consecutive failures become a serious problem.

A couple questions so I can determine how I might see a potential PRB proceeding.....

Did you attend NSI or no?

Did you have an orientation PRT at your unit and how did you do then?

How often does your unit do a group PT session?

Our unit conducts a mock PRT several weeks before the official ones. Then we FEP anyone who is even close to the fail points. Didn't have anyone fail this semester.

Does 4/C MIDN mean you are a college Freshman? If so, I have never seen a Freshmen in ROTC get disenrolled for their first PT failure. Now if you fail 2 or 3 in a row that is a different story. However, I speakly strictly in terms of the Army. I don't imagine the other branches are too far off.

I have not yet put in a bad day chit, we're looking to see if I can and retake it this upcoming weekday. Thank you for the help, I will definitely look into the those documents that were sent.

Yes, I did attend NSI. I had an inventory PRT at the beginning of the semester, and ran a horrible time,13:43. We do PT 2 times a week as a group, and FEP is 3 times. The mock PRT I ran a horrible time as well, 12:48. Thank you for taking the time to help me sir.

Yes, that does mean a college Freshman. I was told if we fail 2 official PRTs we'll be dropped from the program. Thank you for the help.

I think the important question here is whether you sought resources and help...your attendance at PT, attendance at FEP.

For example, if you weren't already directed, did take the initiative, knowing that your inventory PRT and mock PRT were terrible, to attend FEP on your own?

The time difference between your inventory and the mock PRT is significant improvement, and assuming we're talking about an 11:09 this time around...if that's a direct result of your work over time (as opposed to being sick or something), that's a good indicator.

On the good news side, you have shaved nearly a minute off your time. That shows you can in fact make progress. Your time isn't horrible, but for the sake of 9 seconds you would not have this churn going on.

Every unit has their own FEP process, but for us, FEP would have you focusing specifically on cardio. It may sound strange, but we have found that having a sports medicine guru at the university explain the science of running can help people. Not everyone has the fluid motion with proper arm motion, heel push through, etc. Worth asking about if your time allows.

As others have mentioned, this by itself is not a typical deal breaker or cause for disenrollment. But if this were to go to a PRB, your entire file gets looked at. PRT, uniform inspection, shows up on time, fitrep compared to peers, assists with other battalion events, etc.

What could happen is you could be placed on a leave of absence pending you remediating your score. Or probation/warning. Those aren't meant to beat you down or demoralize you. They are meant to be a reveille call, Heave Out and Trice Up!!!!

See about losing those 9 seconds in the next few days or week. Tell your advisors and others you will get better. And then.....Get Better. No need to beat yourself up over it. But stop repeating the poor performance (NSI not good, inventory PRT not good, latest PRT not good).

You know what needs to be done........go execute. Easier said than done I know. But if easy was all it took, everyone would go ROTC!

Yes, I did attend FEP every Friday since the beginning of the semester. I have seen improvement on the PRT that I took recently, but I know that more work needs to be done to cut off those 9 seconds.

Aye Sir, thank you!

I say this seriously and in no way in a demeaning way… the great thing about running is practice makes perfect! 9 seconds is relatively easy to shave off. I failed my first PRT freshman year. It’s only up from here! Hang in there

Thank you, I'm definitely going to use this as a learning lesson and will improve on it!
