He is part of the Coast Guard contingent of a RAID team. I would say he's earned his way home. One, for being in Afghanistan, and two, for having to deal with the Army regularly.

He's been there, or in training for well over six months at this point.

How long were USMC deployments when you were in TPG? What war was it? I always wonder, it amazing how different deployment lengths are for each branch.

Okinawa and Hawaii by the early 80’s was as follows.
Hardship (no dependants): 1 year with no leave.
Accompanied: 3 years

Hahaha, I can't put "Hawaii" and "Hardship" in the same sentence, dependents or not. As far as Okinawa is concerned, the only hardship these days is for the locals who have to put up with a bad sailor or Marine every now and then.

Back in the Old Corps (65-67) I did a 13 month tour in RVN. We did get R&R but you had to have a quota, and then off you went. Depended on quotas as to where you got to go. Our unit had a big turnover at one point in time and I got to do a seconed R&R. First one was in Japan in December 66, and then spent my birthday in Bangkok in June 67. Normally you had to be in country for a minimum of 6 months to get R&R and only the married guys would choose Hawaii. They opened up Australia right after I left.

They opened up Australia right after I left.

OHHHHHH.....just missed it.

Weirdest Christmas I had was in GTMO. Something like 100 degrees out during the day, but Christmas lights up near the soccer/football friends and the exchange. Navy League sent the ship some nice treats and we organized a gift exchange, but it was a very different Christmas than I was used to. Sure beat the little problem we had underway for Thanksgiving though.
