I was just wondering how many Athlete recruits have received their appointments and in what sports. I received mine about 10 days ago. Let me know especially if you are from Ct or MASS. See you at Beast.

Thanks for the congrats. I was recruited for baseball. Really can't wait to get their.
Americas Finest question. What do you think about taking AP national test. For a regular college it does some good but at WP even if you get a 5 and still test out all you do is get the more difficult course. When I made my official visit I was told by a senior and a couple of other students that unless you wanted to skip a course and take a harder one it was not worth it. I have four AP courses and thats over 300.00 for what. Your opinion. Thanks

I don't know how much you know so I'll explain the whole concept.

Your credits do not transfer but you are able to validate courses if you meet the requirements and pass certain validation tests you will take during Beast. Validation will allow you to have an empty slot which will be filled with a the next class in that subject (Example: If you validate Composition you will be placed in Literature). If there is no required next class in the field it may be replaced with your foreign language (Example: If you validate Chemistry you can start your foreign language on your first year instead of your second).

Validation will put you in "harder" classes but they will be classes you will have to take eventually anyway. It all comes down to your personal goals. Validating classes will decrease the amount of basic required classes you must take which will allow you to begin taking classes for your major earlier than your classmates. This means you will be taking classes which interest you sooner instead of the required ones which in turn will be "easier" since they are the ones you share an interest in in the long run.

Validation will also make it easier to double major if that is one of your goals since you will have more free space for the major required classes.

Not validating also has its benefits since you will take the basic classes which are "easier" since they are entering courses intended for everyone (people from high school, prep school, and college). This could help get a higher GPA (which plays a large role in class rank which determines your chances of getting your branch).

Basically, it comes down to what you want. While it is true that you will have to take the next course which can or cannot be more challenging (Example: Composition is completely different from Literature and I actually find Literature to be easier although it comes after Composition). If taking the classes you want or double majoring is your goal then I suggest validating. If not, then don't. Just remember, the term "easier" is relative and some people find the basic classes harder since some have nothing to do with their major so they find them boring and harder to study and prepare for.

I hope I answered your question, if you have anymore questions or need a more specific answer, feel free to ask. :thumb:

I have to agree with this. I validated several classes at WP and it allowed me to get into higher level/more interesting classes. Back then we couldn't double major, but I was able to get a major and a double minor as well. My worst grades by far were plebe year when I had to take basic plebe English and European history, etc. Once I got into engineering and math electives, my grades went up. Think plebe year I never got above a 3.5 and cow/firstie year I never had below a 4.0. So "easier" may be relative as AF said!

Yeah, btw, what is the grading system at West Point?

Finest and Marciemi. Thanks for the great answers. This helps get a perspective on things. One more question? Even if you take the AP national exams do you still have to test out or validate out of the class to take the next higher one no matter what you get on the AP exam.
Thanks

Yeah, btw, what is the grading system at West Point?

A+ = 97-100% = 4.33 GPA
A = 94-96% = 4.0 GPA
A- = 90-93% = 3.67 GPA

B+ = 87-89% = 3.33 GPA
B = 84-86% = 3.0 GPA
B- = 80-83% = 2.67 GPA

C+ = 77-79% = 2.33 GPA
C = 74-76% = 2.0 GPA
C- = 70-73% = 1.67 GPA

D = 67-69% = 1.0 GPA

F = 0-66% = 0 GPA

All classes are weighted according to credit hours. The average class is 3.0 hours but some are 0.5 (basic gym classes for example) and some can be more like 3.5 or 4.0 (chemistry and math). Chemistry is longer than the average class and math is taken everyday instead of every other day (hence the larger value).

Finest and Marciemi. Thanks for the great answers. This helps get a perspective on things. One more question? Even if you take the AP national exams do you still have to test out or validate out of the class to take the next higher one no matter what you get on the AP exam.
Thanks

You will have to take the test and both will be taken into account together.

Hey Racer1,

When I was at SLS last summer I talked with a Major in the History Department about this subject for a while. He said that history DOES accept AP classes on some tests if you get a 5 or sometimes a 4. Previously I had heard that West Point does not accept them at all. If you took AP US and got a 5 - which many of the folks that end up at USMA to have done (gee, wonder why) - you can validate your plebe year history course. BUT you have to take something in place of it. After speaking with the Major I decided that I would try to take a language in place of history plebe year (most people only start languages as a yuk). Also, if you can test out of the entry level language class (in my case hopefully they'll give me Spanish, which I'm pretty good at) then the advice I got from my squad leader was is DO IT. The 2nd year level foreign language classes only meet twice a week! How sweet is that!? You'll get two extra naps every week plebe year.

Cadets - if you're on here - opinions? feedback?

BTW - I report at 9:00 - see you at beast!!! It should be a good time...

Just to confirm, I heard something similar about the History department but we still took a history test during Beast so I am not sure if the test applies towards validation or is simply to see if you will be placed in an advanced class.

Some foreign languages with very high demand (namely Spanish) is very difficult to get in the basic entry course since so many people want it and there is a limit on the amount of classes. They people who spoke to us during foreign language testing in Beast heavily encouraged "validating" basic level spanish or risk a high chance of not getting it as your language since the next spanish course would have more slots.

Mom3boys, Perryguy, all good information. Great video very helpfull. Thanks

Mom3boys: Wow! That powerpoint was cool and contained a lot of valuable info. Thanks!

I will give you a warning about this though. I validated Chemistry, so opted to start my Foreign Languge sequence as a plebe too. However, I also validated the entry level language year as well, which meant I placed into a cow level course. Along with one other yearling, and all the rest cows - including my squad leader!! :eek: As you can imagine, this was not the best situation for group projects or even having anyone to study with or ask for a homework assignment. Second semester I opted to switch (these were semester language electives) into Econ. instead (which was mostly yearlings but a few plebes). Waited and took my last language requirement cow year.

Now on the other hand, I validated as much calculus as I could and was placed into the one top section of plebes (who basically skipped into Diff Eq's). It was only plebes during that course, but then yearling year I was in 400 level (firstie) courses. Being a yearling in a class full of firsties was fine - and maybe even fun. Being a plebe in a class of cows was not. :wink:

I will add though that in general placing out of the language was a good deal as I didn't have to deal with the labs or Saturday classes that my classmates who started with the basic language did!

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I'll look into it more before I take any kind of action.
