Is it plausible to assume that VP nominations are somewhat "reserved" to competitive candidates who are somehow unable to receive a nomination from other sources?

The SAs are very strategic on how they use these. The example you give may well be one of the strategies.

I see, Thanks for clarifying. By the way, is there an interview required for the vice-presidential nomination. I have applied for it recently.
