Experience with Laptops?

Hey man. My mom has the Latitude, and I use one for school. A friend of mine has the Apple. I've used both and I feel like neither has an edge over the other. The good thing with the Dell is that there is a Dell technician on campus, and it's a lot cheaper for the same specs. The Apple's sexier (the latitude is basially a slate) and supposedly less prone to viruses. One thing I don't like about the Apple is that it doesn't have a removable battery, so you would have to send it in when or if it goes bad. Personally, and I'm getting a new laptop for VMI as well, I'll go with a Dell and save about 500 dollars.

For me any laptop that has 2gb ram or more, not running vista, and 2.1ghz processor or more is gunna be good. a webcam and a good video card helps for movies and skype haha. from there its about price really. why pay 1,500 dollars for an apple when you can have the same specs from a Dell with better customer service for 2/3 the price of the apple?

Couple thoughts for you gents-
As far as the original Laptop question at VMI - I would stick with Dell primarily because the IT Technician on post is Dell certified and will support you for nothing if you have Hardware issues. He will not work on non- Dell machines- You are on your own if you have a hardware issue. While I don't think about hardware issues as being a common problem but-we found this could be something of a show stopper last spring when my son had an issue with his Gateway. You really can't afford to be withouyt your computer for more that a day or so at the max- but Lexington/Rockbridge County is not the hot bed of IT support. Fortunately I found a way to get his machine fixed (it turned out to be pretty minor fan problem but had to be opened up to find that out) -but I was really only able to do so because I know several people in the community there who helped him out. Without that it was gonna be a pain to get him some rapid help getting it fixed. I would Definitely stick with Dell so you can take advantage of the FREE support available to you on Post.

I can sympathize with you being ready to graduate from HS (by the time you are 18 who isn't?:rolleyes:)- but do not make the mistake of forgetting how to study effectively this last semester. You are not enlisting so you won't be putting acadmics behind you. To the contrary you are going to a very demanding academic college environment where a ton of extra military and athletic demands will be layered onto your world. Use your last semester in HS to hone your academic time management skills so you have good study habits to fall back on when you start facing the inevitable time crunch next fall.
