YOUR DOGS, CATS & Other Domestic Fauna - Cute, sad, buff or silly

15 years ago our dog died. She was a great dog - a big dumb lab that was as calm as could be until a stranger got near our kids - but she had a tumor we didn't know about that cut her life short. One of the hardest things I have had to do is to come home from the vet and tell the kids she was gone. Our kids were young then and begged for a new dog. We finally gave in and got a rescue lab mix mutt. Shortly after we got him we noticed some issues and brought him to the vet. Turned out that he had several health issues and allergies and the vet warned us that he would not have a long life. We agreed early on not to go to extreme and costly measures to keep him going, but would pay for whatever routine daily meds the dog needed to be comfortable. At first our hope was that he would live long enough for the kids to be old enough to deal with it. Then it was to have him live long enough for them to finish high school...then college.

Yesterday we had to put him down. He made 15 years and was a good dog. I'm going to miss him...

😢 But he was with you, and that’s all that counted for him.

I love this thread. Just like the reverent bacon thread. Makes me happy. A great segue when threads get political or heated, good therapy when my heart is heavy or tired.
Keep the posts coming.
@Heatherg21, here ya go.. This is my pooch Gunnar.. He's a one year old standard Dachshund [referred to by kids everywhere as a 'wiener dog':)]

I grew up with two black and tan shorthairs.
Big dog hearts in unintentionally funny bodies. Total smugglers.

Handsome boy, and clearly a Good Boy.
Gunnar is a good boy for sure.. and he does indeed have a lot of heart.. I have to remind him periodically that he may be German but he isn't a German Shepherd.. As the AKC standard says the Dachshund is 'courageous to the point of rashness' and any display of shyness is considered a serious fault.
Looks like our pooches have something in common.. Gunnar loves his tummy rubs.. :)

Buster is on better and more expensive pain meds than I, plus I'm sharing the heating pad with him. We got a foot of snow and at age 14 he's still jumping in and out of snow drifts. He jumped out of one and onto the street yesterday and limped back home. He has more ambition than intelligence at this point.

BUSTER also appears to be patriotic! Good boy Buster.

NEW PUP 1.jpg

DD got a new red doberman pup to keep our granddog 'Honey' company. DS spent many hours napping with the two of them at DD's house.
Last week, he was tasked with checking in on the new pup when DD went to work (she took Honey to work with her). I get a panicked phone call, the pup is missing. Not in the house, not in the yard. AWOL.

He and I alerted the neighbors, drove the roads and alleys, called animal control, all while terrified to call her and tell her. Then, I am walking and whistling and I hear frantic puppy yips coming from a neighbor's living room. They weren't home. Another neighbor called them and lo and behold, it was HIM! They had captured and kenneled him to keep him safe. MIRACLE! A very long two hours of my life, I think I aged 10 years. I'm not prepared to handle real live human grandchildren.

We did get to tell her it had a happy ending, and he slept the rest of the day. Little turd had dug his way out of the yard. His name prior to this event was Cash (after Johnny). Now, DD has elected to call him Chapo.
