Some sites claim USCGA has an admit rate from 22% to about 30%. This does not make sense to me. Collegeboard for instance says they get admissions info. directly form the schools. Collegeboard says about 1400 applications, sounds way to low. I thought that the number was more like 3000 to 3500 applications. Thess number would USCGa admit rates into the 10-15 range and this sounds more like other academy admission rates. Any additional info would be welcome. I know these numbers don't menat much (quality of school etc) but I would just like to verify what I have heard.. that USCGA is one of the toughest Academies to get into.

Since you are basically asking the same questions in two different USCGA threads, I'll answer this one and you can cut and paste my response to the other if you wish.

Service Academies seem to count their applications a little differently. Some will count every person who opens the web page and submits their name and address as an "application," others will realistically state the number of 100% completed applications, others will fall somewhere in between.

For the USCGA class of 2012, there were 2,806 applications to the USCGA, and 1,370 were deemed "completed." Of those completed applications, there were 412 appointments offered, and 292 accepted.

For the USCGA class of 2013, there were 3,378 applications to the USCGA, and 1,672 were deemed "completed." Of those completed applications, there were 411 appointments offered, and 288 accepted.

For the upcoming class of 2014 - applications are way up over last year, and there will be fewer appointments in total this year (265).

The class of 2014 will be one of the most competitive classes in decades at the USCGA.

This is incredibly nerve racking. Why such a small number of appointments this year?

Smaller class being brought in.... for many reasons

Also remember there are approx 57 USCGA Scholars that have a spot in that groups of 265 (those spots are not assigned until March).. plus there were about some LOAs sent out already...

Not to mention the deferrals from c/o 2013 to c/o 2014. At first I thought the smaller number of spots offered may be due to space but I was talking to a couple of my 4/C friends and they told me there were empty rooms all over the place in Chase.

Chase Hall is bigger than it used to be. My firstie year, we were hurting for room.

Based on what I last heard in early November the class size for the next couple of years will remain hovering around the 265 number. The class of 2014 is set to be around 265 (that number includes CGAS, deferrals and LOAs). Keep in mind, even though some have been offered an LOA not all will complete their application, some may even choose to attend another SA.
Like all the SAs the number in each class is based upon the needs of each individual service. They look into the future and predict officer attrition as well as retention, with today's economy seems as if retention will be playing an even bigger role in forecasting future need.

yeah.... oops, I forgot!... you'll be back! :)

Luigi is correct (as usual) about colleges and service academies reporting their statistics differently...he's also correct that admission to the Class of 2014 will probably be the most competitive in the last 10-15 years.

Since we have already received over 3,200 (3,378 last year) applications with almost 1,000 (768 last year) EA applicants, we requested CGHQ allow us to return/increase the class size to 290...that request was approved today. Due to the record number of EA applicants, it's very unlikely that we will be releasing any EA notifications prior to December 15th. Thanks for your patience and Happy Thanksgiving!

Objee I love the fact that you post here and keep us up to date with information!!!

Thanks, Objee, for the good news! It doesn't make the waiting any easier, but the increase in class size sure lifts the spirits! Thanks again for posting!

Objee, concerning the 3,200 applications, are these complete applications? I noticed that for Class of 2013 there were 1,672 completed applications. Is it really double this year?

Also, am I correct in thinking you will start review of newbie (non-EA) files on 15JAN, and the EA files on 1FEB?

Thank you, -officer

As of yesterday, we have received 5,141 applications, but only 1,097 complete records.

The CCEB will start reviewing RA files on January 14th and we will begin reevaluating EA deferrals shortly thereafter.

Okay, one more question. Once you receive the updated information from an EA applicant who was deferred, do you drag out the entire file and re-look at the whole thing with the new stuff, or do you just look at the new stuff and calculate that into "your secret formula" not pulling the whole file? Thanks, -officer

is it possible to get a LOA and then not get an offer?

Yes...the LOA letter clearly states that the offer is contingent on the applicant meeting eligibility requirements and a final review by the Director of Admissions. Some applicants who received LOA's to 2014 were deferred for not meeting specific eligibility requirements and others were deferred by the Director of Admissions.

The updated information is reviewed along with the entire record within Admissions...this review will determine whether the record is distributed again to the CCEB under RA or rejected from further consideration for 2014.

You're an angel! Thanks for the quick responses. -officer

Just one more question (yes, I know I already said that earlier).
Does the 1,097 include the EA files too? Probably not, right? -officer

Thank you for the response, he received the Coast Guard Scholarship. Do you know anything about that?
