The STEM program Application will be available online in early February.

  • Session I: 07-12 JUN for Rising 8th-9th Graders.
  • Session II: 14-19 JUN for Rising 10th Graders.
  • Session III: 21-26 JUN for Rising 11th Graders.
Eligibility: The Naval Academy Summer STEM Program is offered to rising 8th-11th Graders. Students must demonstrate superior academic performance to include GPA, class standing, and/or strong PSAT, SAT or ACT results. An achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, in good health, have a positive attitude and good moral character are among additional selection criteria.

Tuition & Expenses: All students selected to participate will receive a full scholarship to attend the camp, which includes your room and board, meals, as well as a variety of materials. Plan on bringing extra cash for snacks and souvenirs.

Each student is responsible for arranging transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Those flying commercial air should make arrangements to arrive at Baltimore-Washington International airport (BWI) between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Day 1 of the program, and depart after 2:00 p.m. on the last day of the program. Buses and midshipmen escorts will be on hand to get you to and from the Academy and BWI.

Very interesting that they seem to be expanding the ages this year. We were disappointed to learn about this for the first time last summer, after all my kids were too old to participate. But now my current freshman would have a chance at it! I'll look it up in February when the window opens! Thanks!

Is this basically a SLS for younger kids?

Wasn't aware of such a program.

If you go to the link provided above, and just type STEM in the search box, you'll get more information. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - it seems like more of that focus and less on the Naval Academy itself. However, based on the fact that they specify good grades, ACT/SAT scores, athletics and extracurriculars, I think it's also probably a bit of a "pre-recruiting" source for them! It's also completely paid for (other than travel/air to get there), unlike SS.

This is great news for my freshman, we thought it was only for up and coming freshman..yeah!!!!

Does anyone have a sense whether attending STEM will decrease your chances of getting NASS -- especially if you attend STEM as a rising 10th or 11th grader? I realize they are different programs but, if the purpose is to expose someone to USNA, might USNA not think that it makes more sense to expose someone who's never before seen USNA before someone who already attended STEM?

I have no knowledge on this but am wondering if anyone has heard anything.

Both programs are designed to expose prospective candidates to USNA so I wonder how that will play out. STEM is a new Federally supported program USNA implemented last year as a pilot and then more fully rolled out this year. It may become an either/or to broaden candidate base exposure.

One issue I see with STEM are the dates. A lot of Virginia schools including some in the Richmond area are in session till mid-June.

It's great they extended the age for the older kids, but my son's group was taken out. They didn't include the "rising 7 graders", and he is extremely disappointed. :frown:

I've been checking the website for the past month to see when the applications were coming out, and found the age change. Now we'll have to wait another year, and hopefully they won't change it again.

Glad to know - I was wondering how we'd managed to miss this all the years my son was interested in the academies. I didn't realize it was a new program last year.

I would still guess (purely my opinion) that they would try to get the top candidates to both. I'd agree with you on borderline candidates that if they went to STEM, I could see them passing them over in favor of exposing another potential candidate to USNA.

I would love to hear from anyone who experienced STEM last year (or their parents)!

?

What exactly do you do at STEM? I know it's science, tech, engineering, mathematics but is it done like a lecture class or a more hands-on lab type program? Do you need to be an absolute genius to do this or would they want a well rounded person like the admissions process?

According to the site...http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/stem.html...it seems kinda like a mix but more heavy to the hands-on side.

One of my students attended last year. His airfare was included. Looks like this component was changed, too...glad the ages have expanded. My student had a blast!
