I just wanted to thank everyone for their good information/insights into this process.

Son received a letter today that he received a 4 yr. tier 1 scholarship to SUNY Maritime College.

While it wasn't his first choice of schools, we are beyond pleased!

Great backup if USNA and USCGA don't pan out!

Thanks, again, everyone!:thumb:

Congratulations to you and your son Fairwinds!
Good Luck with USNA and USCGA!

Congrats to Fairwinds (and son!) for the scholarship!
Woo hoo!

Ok, now a question....
This is to you and anyone/everyone else reading this post:
What does "tier 1" or "tier 2" etc. mean? And what about
"type 1" or "level 4" for example?
I am thinking they have to do with NROTC and/or AFROTC?
(My son has applied for an AROTC scholarship - and I don't understand that lingo!"
Thanks so much for any help!
:confused1:

From the Navy ROTC website:

"In structuring our academic programs to meet these challenges, undergraduate academic majors for NROTC Navy option midshipmen are divided into three categories or tiers: Tier 1 - engineering programs of Navy interest, Tier 2 - other engineering, math and science programs, Tier 3 - Foreign language and remaining academic programs. In order to keep pace in this high tech and diverse environment, approximately 85% of Navy Option NROTC scholarships offers will be awarded to students interested in completing a Tier 1 or Tier 2 academic major. The NROTC scholarship provides full tuition and fees at 158 of our nation's most elite and prestigious colleges and universities."

The Tier 1 majors are:
Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical Engineering,
Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Naval Architecture & Marine/Naval Engineering, Nuclear Engineering,
Ocean Engineering, Systems Engineering.

CONGRATULATIONS! SUNY Maritime is one of the hidden treasures in military commissioning. Best of luck!
