My son applied for a nom to USNA and has completed the dodmerb process. We got a nom letter before Christmas to USMMA. He submitted the online application over the weekend and took papers to the school this morning for them to send in. In looking at the dodmets website, it is showing the admissions process for NA as "In Process" which it has been for 3 weeks, but now it has MMA as "Offer Extended" so does that mean that he will be getting an offer to attend???????

If he hasn't turned in all the requirements, I would be hesitant to believe that the "offer extended" is true (it might be), because in reading some other threads, there have been people who didn't even apply to USMMA or finish their applications, and their DODMERB read "offer extended". Seems like for some, it was just a mistake.

I would have him call the Academy. They are very helpful!

shots & wisdom teeth

It is always a proud moment (for everyone) when a DS or DD chooses to attend one of the military academies. Congratulations! :thumb:

My piece of advice and the bane of our DS spring scramble last year were the required immunizations (some must be six months apart) and the wisdom teeth. I am probably too late in warning about the immunizations but
you might want to get them going on the shots and get them a dental appointment, even if they have not chosen which school yet.

Good luck and again congrats! P.S. We have a happy plebe at the USMMA.

I second the advice to get the wisdom teeth done now. Our DD spent a full third of her all-too-brief summer break getting them done so she could be cleared for her sea term.

If you can't get the immunizations all in, they'll get the boosters at the academy along with plenty of extras. The yellow fever one was a killer for DD.

Are you saying to have them removed even if there are no issues with them?

Yes. The long & short of it is..... With KP Mids off to sea for long periods at a time, it is NOT advisable to have wisdom teeth troubles in a third world country & in some cases, the KP dentist/s will not clear them for sea year with the teeth intact should they deem them as problematic.

For further information, please do a search in the KP threads for "wisdom teeth". This issue has been discussed a great deal and good advice & information is out there. If you should have trouble finding the topic, please post back & I will post some of the direct links as it is an important issue.

Many folks over the years have had troubles finding an oral surgeon to remove non-troublesome teeth. In a few cases, it was found that a dentist with previous military service understood the problem better.

Do, do, do look into the matter asap. Much better to have it done while under parent's care at home.

How would you know what immunizations are required? If they are required way in advance, is there a way to get a head start or is that being overly optimistic about acceptance at the school?

The requirements are to be be listed in the Logging In 2014 that will be mailed later. Last year's edition is posted here http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/pdfs/LoggingIn2013.pdf and the requirements listed on page 22 are:

Primary and booster immunizations are mandatory (with the exception to item number 9), for the following vaccines and they may be administered any time prior to arriving at the Academy unless otherwise stipulated.

1. Diphtheria - Pertussis - Tetanus (D.P.T.) and a booster dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis - within five (5) years.)
2. Polio (Oral or injectable Polio Vaccine – at least 3 doses)
3. Measles - Mumps - Rubella (M.M.R. #1)
4. Measles - Mumps - Rubella (M.M.R. #2) or Measles second dose
5. Chicken Pox (Varicella) (2 doses)
(This vaccine is not required if you can present documentation from a physician of an antibody titer or if a physician can document the history of Chicken Pox.)
6. Meningococcal Vaccine (Menactra or Metamune)
7. Hepatitis B Series (3 doses)
8. Hepatitis A (2 doses)
9. Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) is a recommended vaccine for females ages 11-12 years and is included in the official immunization schedule published by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC recommends administering the HPV vaccine series to females at ages 13 through 18 years if not previously vaccinated. This is a 3 dose vaccine with the 2nd dose being 2 months apart from the 1st and the 3rd dose 6 months after the first. It is highly recommended that your family physician be consulted regarding the administration of this vaccine before coming aboard for indoctrination day.

chicken pox

DS had the chicken pox in first grade (along with most of his class and younger siblings) and we did not go to the doctor. Therefore, we were not able to medically prove that he had had the chicken pox. So to make a long story short, DS had his chicken pox vaccination the spring before he entered the USMMA. I believe our county health department gave him the shot for
$10.00. Sometimes it is just easier to get the shot rather than jump hoops.

Yes, got those Wisdom teeth out now! My son had them done over chirstmas break his senior year of high school. Also regarding the chicken pox, your doctor can do a blood test to see if there are antibodys (spelling??) in the blood for the c.pox.

thanks jasper! spelling is not one of my best attributes!
