I have to make a decision about senior classes soon and was wondering what I should do....

Spanish is something that I do not particularly enjoy, so I was just wondering, even if I do take Spanish 5 AP next year, will I have to take another foreign language at WP?

Another option is to take a class I would probably get more satisfaction out of, would that make me have to take Spanish at the academy, take a separate language all together, or would I not be forced to take any?

You will have to take a language at West Point in any case. Having more of it in high school will possibly allow you to validate some of the entry level classes, but you would still need to take the advanced class instead.

Although the military is definitely looking for people with language skills, if you truly don't like it or plan to major in it (or take more than the requirements), then there's probably no need to take Spanish 5, especially if it will allow you to take a class instead that they'd also be looking for (more Calculus, AP Sciences of some sort, etc.).

Just my opinion, but many people don't get the opportunity to take more than 4 years of a language in HS, so a 5th year wouldn't be required, but would look good primarily if you wanted to stick with it.

Okay, thank you, that definitely clarifies a lot and is very helpful. I'll probably take AP Chem then in addition to AP Physics senior year (as I've heard a good deal amount of stories about how hard chemistry is during plebe year).

Having done the same and from what I've heard, I would strongly think that would be a great idea! Chem seems to be the number one killer at all the academies. If you forget your language in the meantime, you'll just end up starting at an easier level, which may not be all bad if you're not that interested in it. Good luck!

Aw, man..., thought you only had to take basics and if you validated them they were open.

My history teacher told my class many times that Chemistry was magic while he attended USMA. He said it was the only way he could explain it.

And I agree with marciemi, another year of spanish is definately not needed (I didn't even know high schools taught a 5th level). The Physics and Chemistry will help you out for sure. :thumb:

I took AP Chem my senior year of high school and in hindsight it was an amazing decision. Knowing what your teacher is talking about and not having to bother with the homework (I seriously did not open the book outside of class all semester) will make 1st semester plebe year so much easier. Depending on how much is covered in high school it could make second semester very well may be just as easy
