Hello my name is Stephen and I'm sure you guys get a bunch of these so I am sorry :] But anyways, I am currently a sophmore in highschool. I just wanted you guys to give me guidance on what classes I should be taking and also to critique my schedule and what I can do inorder to gain an appointment to the Naval academy

Here's a little about my background
I come from a family with veterans from the South Vietnamese war, 1 of my uncles was a paratrooper in the airforce, 1 was a helicopter pilot in the airforce i believe, dad was in the medical corp. Grandfather was in the south vietnamese army as a colonel, and a couple of my other uncles were in the South vietnamese Navy If this helps at all.

As far as Leadership, extra curricular and civic involvement so far:
-I am involved in the Interact Club and I'm on the Science Olympiad Team(science competitions against other schools)
-I am a Boy Scout and Senior Patrol leader in my troop (I will be an Eagle Scout very soon)
-I am Swim Team MVP, "leaning toward Captain this year, Hopefully"
-I have almost 200 Hours of community service, will be able to complete about 500+ by the time I'm done with my Junior Year (200 every summer from Youth Counceling Program)
- I am a Youth Summer Programs Councelor for my city's Youth Programs
- I am a Private Tutor (part time Job)
- I have been playing Piano for 10 Years

Do you have any tips for me, any changes I should make? Anything I should take up or add? Constructive Criticism is welcome. What can I do to look stronger for the application. I am going to take the PSAT this upcoming semester to prepare for the SAT

Thank you

If at all possible, I would say take all the AP classes you can. Not for the purpose of having "AP" on your transcript or anything, but just for the challenge. The more rigorous the course the better. That is the best way to prepare yourself for the academy as well as college entrance exams. Also, when you take the SAT, and take it early just to practice, but I would also recommend taking the ACT to see which one you feel more comfortable with, that is unless you are satisfied with the result of your first SAT. The ROTC thing is awesome, I wish we had that at my school... :frown:

Hi,

I would recommend that you continue with Spanish instead of switching to French. USNA prefers four years in a single language - building proficiency and fluency - as opposed to multiple languages that you dapple in.

Otherwise, I would say it looks like you are on track. Good luck with your PSATs.

First of all, your current plans for classes combined with your extracurriculars are excellent, add a couple more AP courses and it'll be outstanding. What you need now: run/get stronger for the CFA, avoid a headache and don't be too forthcoming on your dodmerb med history, familiarize yourself with the application processes of your different nomination sources, find people to write great letters of rec for you, and make sure you get great SAT scores. Based on what the Academy is looking for, you do all that and I'd say you have an excellent chance :thumb:

Thank you for the input usnahopeful2014,GoNavyMom, and FeartheGoat, much appreciated

I don't think you have enough history classes. It looks like you're going to take world history and gov/econ but where's u.s. history?

By and large your course selections look very good - do concur with the recommendations to increase the AP load for the challenge and prepare you for the validation exams you would take during Plebe Summer.

Another recommendation - take advantage of the opportunity you have to participate in STEM and/or a summer sports camp. These will provide you with opportunities to get inside Bancroft and learn more about NAVY. Of course you also should apply for NASS during Feb of your junior year. Check <www.usna.edu/Admissions> and <www.navysports.com> for more information on these programs.

Best wishes

I will be taking US history over the summer at a community college to make space for jrotc as mentioned above in my previous post
