I know many people on his thread have experience with or at the Academy, so I was wondering which companies are the most strict or the most relaxed as well as how you are selected for your company and when you are selected? (I have a family connection to a certain company.)

I don't think anyone has unlocked the secret of how you are selected for a company. Some say it's random (other than ensuring the right number of females go to each company -- i.e., as a percentage of the total). Others believe there is some attempt to mix perceived qualities -- i.e., don't put all football recruits or strongest h.s. students in same company. They don't put siblings in the same company, far as I know.

It is one thing about which I'd never waste a second of my time b/c -- unless things have changed, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. You can't select your co. and, if your class is one that changes companies at some point (whether and when this happens varies over time), you don't get a voice in where you go.

I've never heard of USNA -- in modern times at least -- making an effort to place people in a company where family members were assigned. If it happens, my guess is that it's coincidence.

Finally, forget about who's strict and not. First, you can't control where you go and, second, this too can change over time with new Co. Officers and mid leadership.

A random thought I heard on placement is that it is in size order. Tallest mids are in the low and high number companies and then in descending order from both sides so the shortest meet in the middle.

Don't know how much truth there is to this just another factor in the equation.

I wish that were true but its not. There seems to be some sort of quality spread attempt, but as usna1985 said its very random.

GoNavyMom - I know that was true at West Point WAY back (like late 1800's/early 1900's) but hadn't heard it about Navy before. Probably possible at some point but not any more! The info they gave us at CVW said that the class was distributed between the companies to keep gender, racial, IC, academic, and athletic balances. So yeah....random!

Based on what my candidate said he "heard" during his CVW - he was in 16th company (Sweet 16!) which was supposed to be very lax. He was told that 10th and 25th companies were very strict. Sample size: 1. But I agree that it will definitely change with the leadership from year to year anyway.

Marciemi,

Just for the record, I wasn't speaking based on personal experience:wink:.

Leadership in a company changes each Semester.

Good point, but a lot of times it may not be just the mid leadership, but also the company officer (or whatever they call it at Navy - the actual officer in charge of the company).

Likewise!

I was in sweet 16 and during my 4 years we had 2 different SEL's and 3 different company officer's so we were all over the map. My plebe and 1/c years were great but the other two sucked.

The atmosphere changes with each firstie class. Company officers are important but they can only do so much to derail the wishes of 40 1/c, as long as they work together. If the 1/c are cool, the company will be cool. If they are joes, don't be late to formation.
