DD and another candidate both received nominations from the same congressman just before Christmas. They also both have another nomination, she a presidential, the other candidate a JROTC. The pre-interview letter from the senator indicated that she had to let them know if she had a nomination from any other source. At the time she had only a presidential and sent an email indicating this. She did not send a follow up email reporting her congressional nomination because she received a letter indicating they were aware of her congressional nomination and therefore would not interview her for a senatorial. BUT the other candidate was given the opportunity to compete for the senator's nomination...has anyone heard of this before? We think it means either, the academy indicated to the senator's panel that she is "out of the running"... or she will get some life changing news soon. Also, shortly after receiving the congressional nomination she was invited to a CVW... I see many others were invited around the same time but we know many are invited who do not get appointments. (btw we live in MD) What do you think?

No one fully understands the ways of individual MOCs other than the individual MOCs.

That said, here's my best guess. Many MOCs will not give you a nom if you have a nom from another MOC but will if your other source is the Pres or JROTC. The reason is that they want the max # of kids from their state to have noms. However, they also want to ensure that the best kids do get an MOC nom b/c they know that Pres noms are non-competitive (I'm not sure whether JROTC noms are as well) and thus don't want to leave their highly-qualified consituents to rely on those noms.

If I read your post correctly, your DD has an MOC nom but her friend does not. That may well be the difference.

And, yes, CVWs are a good sign and do signal that USNA considers you a competitive candidate. However, as you note, many not invited to CVWs do get appointments and some who are invited don't.

I know this is a little off topic - but when you mentioned that some who are invited to CVW don't get offered appointments - any idea how many? I was there last weekend and the mids that I was around acted as though the candidates that were there would naturally get appointments.

It also seemed that the Academy was in "pick us" mode - like we would have a choice, not the other way around (does that make sense?)

My son was there last weekend and met at least one candidate who hadn't received any nominations, so I would guess most likely wouldn't be getting an appointment. I don't know how anyone can know how many because it really comes down to the people you're competing against (in your area). It could turn out that you're a strong candidate but someone else is just a bit stronger and they get the appointment off that MOC's slate. I don't think anyone - even admissions - could tell you that at this point. But it does seem like the people receiving CVW's are definitely your stronger candidates! Good luck!

To the OP - I read it that you're saying they BOTH have congressman noms, and friend got to interview for the senator one and your daughter didn't. In my opinion, there could be various reasons for this, and they could be the opposite end of the spectrum. As you speculate, the senator could view your DD as a very strong candidate and either suspect or already know that she's getting an appointment and therefore not see any point in interviewing her. Conversely, the senator could just be far more impressed by something on her friend's application, and be considering giving friend another nomination to increase the chances of an appointment. Or somehow they could have just slipped through the cracks and they don't know of the congressman's nom somehow. Or friend could have called and simply asked to interview anyway - I know someone who did this. They were told they already had a nomination and that they didn't need to interview and they asked if there was any way they could interview for a different academy with the alternate MOC and were allowed to. Many possibilities and I can see how it could be frustrating to you and DD to see her friend kind of get an "extra" chance. Best of luck to you as well!

Thanks for the responses. Yes, both my daughter and the other candidate had a MOC nomination and another nomination before the senator's interview. My daughter did write an email respectfully requesting an interview even though she had her congressional nomination...she did not receive a response.

Either way the CVW sounds like a great experience! I do not know the numbers regarding how many attend related to how many get appointments. I do know some are invited and others request it.

Sorry for not understanding your original post. :frown:

I wouldn't read too much into anything. I'm not aware of USNA notifying MOCs of appointments they intend to offer but maybe it happens.

I've never seen numbers on CVW invitees who get appointments. I would say most do b/c they are typically offered only to highly qualified candidates. However, those who didn't get one . . . every year, many candidates who don't get CVWs do get appointments. There are way fewer CVW slots than candidates who want them.

Your daughter should milk it for everything it's worth. Ask questions. Put herself in the position of the plebe she's shadowing. If she has ANY negative feelings/concerns after CVW, she should give serious thought as to whether USNA is for her. If she comes away more convinced than ever . . .

Summer Seminar/CVW

I'm wondering if attending Summer Seminar would make one less likely to receive a CVW invite. Any thoughts?

It probably depends on the candidate. I went to NASS and still recieved a CVW. However I live in Wisconsin so this may have something to do with it.

D attended summer seminar, was invited to CVW after receiving MOC nomination. We live 1 hour south of Annapolis.

CVW

Son 3Q'd with Senator Nomination Dec 09, NO LOA attending CVW late Feb. Son didn’t wait for CVW invitation; he called USNA Regional early January and requested the invite. We wonder if he would have received a CVW invitation from USNA. It would have been nice to know if he was/is one of the "highly qualified candidates". We don’t believe attending USNA soccer camp last summer would affect a USNA CVW invite. (not a recruited athlete)

Oh well, he is going with “the candidate requested CVW invitation" and looking forward to the experience.

I thought that was routine? That all academies notified the appropriate MOC a week before telling the candidate or mailing the appointment so that the MOC could break the big news first if they wanted. My son was called by both his congressman and senator about his appointments before they came up anywhere online or he received them. Although in the OP's case, this still may not make sense since it is a different MOC (than gave her the nomination). Although I do know some MOC's (or staffers) work very closely together so it's possible they talked and discovered it that way. Although still, it should be a very short timeline and if this was the case, OP should be hearing something very soon.

Ditto for my son. Exactly!

My son is triple qualified with a nomination from our MOC, but he has not yet received an appointment. He also requested a CVW but has not been invited, and now I believe all the dates are full. Should we be reading the writing on the wall??? I keep reading comments on this forum like " a 3.0 and 600 SAT kid from Nebraska has a better shot than a 4.0 and 700 SAT kid from San Diego...(my kid). He's worked so hard and is still very hopeful. Any thoughts? He was told by the offshore sailing coach that his application looks "very strong" but he has no pull in terms of filling spots on the team.

Mom4224inSD

I would continue to check with admissions to see if a spot opens. Are you sure CWV is full.

MominSD-- I'm in the same situation as your son. Nomination, 3qd, strong app, yet no CVW invite. My request for one was not even responded to. I wouldn't look too much into it-- like usna1985 there are more qualified candidates than there are CVW spots.

Thanks, everyone, for all the info. Maybe I will contact my BGO about the CVW. I received two nominations, one in late December and one last week. I was the first in my state to have my application completed, but I had to send in extra medical records. My medical wasn't approved until after the first review, plus my new SAT scores weren't in, so I was deferred. The waiting is hard.

Keep me posted on when you receive word, and I'll do the same!
