Candidate Stats

O.K., I know everyone probably gets tired of reading these, but I'm going to do it anyway and I appreciate any input. I will list all of my credentials.

Academics: Number 4 in class of about 150. (Classes that are important) Senior Schedule: Spanish 3 Pre-AP, Calculus AP/IB, Student Council (VP), English 4 AP, Concurrent Government and Economics, Soccer. All four years of High School I took Pre-AP or AP Math classes, all but one year of English, all highest level possible of History/Social Studies classes, four years of Varsity Soccer, 3 years of science, all but Physics my junior year were Pre-AP. I have been a member of NHS for two years. My GPA is a 4.0 (around 101.5 weighted).

Athletics: Varsity Soccer: 4 years, captain for 2 All-District Honorable Mention. Varsity Football: 2 years (Sophomore and Junior) All-District 2nd team Kicker.

ACT taken twice, composite on both 28. (This is probably my area of most concern) 1st Test: English-30, Math-28, Reading-25 frown, Science-28. 2nd Test (I read about the academy taking best of any of your scores from separate test, so I went in and focused on the reading to make up for it): English-28, Math-27, Reading-28, Science-28. I don't know if this is really how they look at it but my best would be English-30, Math-28, Reading-28, and Science-28.

Community Service: I have done many hours, including hours for National Honor Society, but also outside of it. Probably at least 30-40 hrs. per year for Junior and Senior years, before that maybe 15-25 per year.

CFA: (These may not be totally accurate, but if I am off it is not by much at all) BB Throw: 67', Shuttle Run: 9.2 and 9.1, Pull-ups: 9 (for sure), Sit-ups: 70 (for sure), Push-ups: 65-67, Mile Run: 6:49 (for sure)

Nomination from Mac Thornberry, 13th District of Texas (I heard my area is under-represented, but I'm not really sure how much influence it has on the final decision, if any.)

Currently need a waiver for wasp allergy.

If anyone can tell me what they think, (I'm not asking if I am going to get in because I know no one can tell me that) I would appreciate it. I just want to know the opinions of how strong a candidate I am. I have recently become somewhat discouraged reading other people scores for CFA's and ACT/SAT. I just don't know how much I would stand out. Any input is greatly appreciated.

From what you've posted, you appear to be a strong candidate. However, read my sticky above. We don't know what we don't know about you (e.g., what your teachers and BGO said about you).

Also, whatever I say means nada b/c I don't know your competition.

Fear The Goat (love your screen name, btw)...I'm feeling your pain. Recently "met" another candidate on here from a different state who has very similar quals as mine except he's a little higher on his SAT/ACT, and I'm a little higher on CFA scores. We even both play the same sport. And, the most important difference, he heard from his MOC that he received an offer of appointment last week, and I haven't heard a thing yet.

I do have three noms, but I know that doesn't guarantee anything. Even though what you put on here looks good to me, I have no idea what the competition looks like, except for me of course, so here are my stats so you can compare. Of course, I'm in the same "waiting" boat as you are, so they might not be of much help.

SAT 590 Reading/680 Math
ACT 28 English/29 Math

College Algebra, Pre-calc Trig and [Calculus 1-this semester] (all dual-credit)
Chem 1, Chem 2 and [Physics 1-this semester] (all dual-credit)
Honors Biology (high school level)
Brit and American Lit, English Comp 1 & 2, Speech
World History, Western Civ, US History, Economics and Gov't
Latin (4 years), (French 1 1/2 years)
GPA: 3.87 (3 A's and 1 B in my college classes so far)

Soccer (club, all four years), team captain 2 seasons (I'm a home-schooler so haven't had the opportunity to play varsity sports.)
Tumbling (2 years)

Work experience: Piano Teacher (7 students per week), Music Director for community theater (started as a volunteer then became an employee) Also had a paid internship last summer as a Videographer/ Video Editor and program developer for the children's ministry at a church in SD

Numerous community service hours, including political campaigns, church activities and mission trips, community theater, CASA, soup kitchens, camp counselor, etc. (I also was in CAP in my freshman year.)

Other interests: Free running, piano/keyboard, bass and acoustic guitar, table magic (card tricks, etc)

CFA: B-ball throw 70' (may not be exact but close), 90 sit-ups, 80 push-ups, 12 pull-ups, 9.0 shuttle run, 6:34 mile run (may not be exact but close, it was definitely 6:30 something)

usna1985 and Magikeys, thank you for your comments. 1985, I realize that you can't tell me anything for sure I just wanted to know if I looked very strong or not, thanks. Magikeys, that is an impressive resume, my high school does not even offer many of those classes that you have taken and your work history is very impressive as well. Keep me updated on your status as well. Thanks again.

Im in the same ball park with grades an such, but my HS doesn't has the sames classes really, and We have different clubs and such that I'm apart of that are considered leadership oriented. I wonder how Navy compares all the different stuff.

Magikeys and FeartheGoat, both of you have amazing resumes. I kind of have a similar resumes to you guys.

Academics: top 5% of class (149 people), GPA 3.92 (unweighted), Senior Schedule: AP English 12, AP Bio, Leadership (Senior VP), AP Calculus B/C, Government (Fall Semester), Piano Ensemble, Music Tech (Sound Engineering), Dance, Community College Science or Math Class for Spring undetermined at the moment

Sports: Marathon Club, my school offers no sports

Work Experience: Piano Teacher

Community Service: Music outreach program, hospital candy striper that worked in E.R.,

Awards/Honors: Who's Who in Mathematics, Prizewinner in Int'l Piano Competitions (Oberlin, Los Angeles Liszt, New Orleans, etc.), NHS, etc.

Test Scores: SAT CR 700, M 670, W 670. I'm taking ACT this Saturday.

CFA: Taking this Friday

Nomination: I recieved one from my Congressman (CA-42nd District). Apparently, California is an extremely competitive district so I'm extremely worried about recieving a nomination.

Why are you extremely worried about receiving a nomination when you already have one? Are you trying to say that you are extremely worried about receiving an appointment?

You all sound quite qualified. However, as stated multiple times on these forums, IT DEPENDS. On many things. I know those asking questions on this thread are regular readers, so you know the drill.

Have each of you made the decision to apply again if you do not receive an appointment this year? My son last year was very firm in that decision. It seemed to make the waiting easier. And while we would have been disappointed to not receive an appointment, he had a plan to get after it and apply again while attending TAMU.

You have each identified what you believe to be the weakest part of your application package. SAT/ACT scores, lack of sports, etc. So, you know exactly what to improve upon should you need to reapply. Having a plan, a decision already done seems to make the waiting easier.

Goat, if your district is still "under represented," it will indeed help you!

SA's admissions staffs have to be overwhelmed with the quality of candidate applications. I understand we see a only a handful of the thousands of outstanding applicants (outstanding grades, classes, test scores, EC's etc) on this site. Truely there is very little difference in most of the 3 Q'ed/Nomination candidates. Of course excluding LOA's. The "extreme" SA appointment competition screams - back up plan required!

S is very competitive in all areas with most on this site. SA appointment remains top choice, however he/we are proud can fulfill his dream of becoming an Officer with a NROTC Scholarship. It is interesting to hear friends and teachers say he will have no problem obtaining an appointment. The reality is a majority people don't realize what is required to gain an appointment and most if not all SA applicants are outstanding students, athletes, school leaders, citizens etc.

I remember dropping by the Honors office at Texas A&M University in March of 2005. My eldest son had earned a President's Endowed Scholarship to begin school in the fall and we needed to drop off some piece of paperwork and happened to be in town over spring break. I was pretty proud of his scholarship and SAT score (1390). Out of curiosity, I asked how many President's Endowed Scholarships they awarded annually. "798 were awarded this year," says the lady, and she continued "the average SAT score was 1498!" I was amazed! I didn't expect so many for one thing, and although I hadn't asked about the scores, I was totally blown away that 1498was the AVERAGE!

When you get to applying for SA's or the honor awards at these big universities, the talent pool is mighty deep indeed! Imagine how many really talented kids with lots of leadership and desire to serve do not receive appointments! At our house, we believe that if you want something, you pursue it with all your might. We also believe that things tend to work out as they are supposed to. Which I repeated silently to myself no less than 100 times per day as we awaited word from USNA.

Yes, I will be applying again if I do not receive an appointment. Texas A&M is also my back up, (and I have been admitted) and my first choice for an NROTC scholarship, followed by University of Texas, then The Citadel (also admitted). But I really want to go to the Naval Academy all four years, because if you apply out of ROTC after your freshman year you go to the Academy as a 3/c right?

You will start as a plebe regardless. Enlisted who may have served for 6 years, people coming from NAPS, seniors applying from college, etc....all start as a plebe.

Oh ok, I just thought since you had already done one year of training as well as the school work that it was very similar to the way everything happened at the academy. But thanks for clearing it up for me.
