NROTC Scholarship Awarded

Congrats to everyone you received the good news today. DS received the official email for his ISR scholarship. Thank you to everyone on this board, especially @GWU PNS, throughout the past few weeks. Silly question, are we allowed to share this news publicly? His coach and advisor have asked a few times about it. They said this is the first time anyone from his school could receive a 4 year Navy scholarship. I havent really see a lot of publicly around the scholarships.

DD's application was complete last summer, then she was interviewed for potential ISR-- but didn't receive it. She's been patiently waiting.
Notified today: NROTC for GWU, her first choice (and where ahe had her virtual interview)😀 She was admitted Early Decision, will be Tier II major.

For those interested: SAT 1320, weighted-GPA 3.9 with several AP classes; NHS; varsity letters Swim team and Dance team; school paper assistant media editor; community service; Student Ambassador; part-time job since sophomore year; Sea Cadets since age 11, staffing Trainings and earning rank of CPO.
(If she hadn't received scholarship, she planned college-program in hope of a side-load.)
Very happy for her, and we look forward to seeing her next fall. Our NSI coordinator will be reaching out in the next month or so regarding which phase is preferred and the next steps. Now is a good time to look for the all elusive sickle cell test results or to just schedule another one.

It's both great and interesting to read everyone's announcements and questions. Thank you for posting them. I miswrote earlier. Our son's scholarship is placed at Texas A&M., however he hopes to shift it to Arizona State as they invited him to join the robotics / drone team and offered an additional scholarship that covers everything else. Plus he really likes their aerospace facilities. Good luck to all and Goooo Navy!

Shifting to Arizona won't be a problem. He can jist email the Great Lakes team and they will shift him over.

You can absolutely share this info. My DS came from a smaller school who had sent only a few kids to service academies. To their knowledge DS was the first to receive any type of 4 year ROTC scholarship. It was a big deal when it was announced at his awards night. DS, DW and I all received calls from fellow students or their parents afterwards for information about the program.

We shared the news months ago 😂. NTAG Northern Plains is issuing a press release once she hears from her top choice college; her high school is hosting a presentation. We are in a rural area and this is also huge news! Shout it from the rooftops - congratulations to your DS!

You are certainly allowed to share the news of your scholarship - many do with newspaper announcements, FB posts, even the "big check" presentation where at an award banquet or pep rally with the whole school present your young adult receives a check with like 240,000.00 or whatever mentioned by a member of that service in uniform. He'll learn and you'll all learn about personal and operational security and not posting things like "My DS is heading out to see on the USS Alexandria this summer - they are picking him up at ___ port on _____ date."(not a good idea to tell the world where a submarine will be - they're kinda sticklers about that for good reason) But stating he's training to serve - I see that as OK.
One perspective on this - I'll just caution for all readers with young adults receiving their scholarships, as I have stated here on the board and in-person in recent years, that not everyone who wins the scholarship and uses it makes it all the way to commission. Some with NROTC scholarships believe it or not don't even make it all the way through the summer NSI training before their Day 1 of Freshman year - over nearly before it starts. Some quit without penalty before the start of year 2. Others - mechanical injuries, grades, discipline issues, ability to pass 2 semesters of Calc/ Physics for Navy option, failed drug tests, one arrest/ DWI... I have empathy for the young adult who tells the world they are going to be a Navy Officer (woohoo!), takes the standing ovation and big check, receives a heroes laudation, and then in the years to come has to run into people at the supermarket or football game, and explain that didn't work out. Maybe they shouldn't have made the big announcement... I don't know. I know one of these - his military career ending "sin" if you will was getting a picture taken at a college halloween party his freshman year dressed as a certain someone with a thin mustache, short in stature, with a swastika on his arm of an SS uniform, and giving the straight-arm salute. I guess he thought it was funny- others-did-not. Party picture taken over a weekend - outrage ensued on social media, and he was drummed out of ROTC in a PRB as quickly as they could organize it. School would have done the same except his Daddy has big connections. I remember his big check ceremony too - I cringe for him when people ask how it's going...
If it further helps, I observed indirectly, mostly from stories from an EMT at NSI and from other parent posts, an inverse relation to the all-stars at JROTC, with 15 medals on their uniforms, come in overconfident their struggles who in SOME cases thrived and in some cases scrubbed out of NROTC 4 years ago. Some were the people walking around asking others "Do you need help?" getting totally overwhelmed and leaving within days. (*and others as would have been predicted kicked *ss) So it's not about past talent - certainly an ISR winner is pinned to be a top talent - I just see a benefit of keeping low key and humble until you get a little further along. You do you - just sharing one perspective that may help some young adults save face if they decide serving is ultimately not for them.
My DS is now a couple of months from commissioning as a Navy Ensign. When he does, I'll START wearing the Navy Dad apparel, but a yardarm in my front bushes, start using nautical terms as I navigate a canoe this summer... but for the last 4 years we've avoided the press, the ceremony, the celebrations until he's actually serving. Just one approach for consideration.

I’ve seen that some applicants have received emails accepting or denying them for the nrotc scholarship. I finished my application in May of last year, was deferred in November, and haven’t heard anything in the past couple of days unlike other applicants. Do I need to reach out to somebody specifically or are emails still being sent?

I totally agree and respect that thinking. [Our family is coming at this from a different angle as my husband was an NROTC graduate and my DD was raised in the Navy lifestyle]. I love that you said ‘you do you’ - you’re right, different strokes for different folks. Ultimately, there is no right or wrong. Congratulations to your DS on his upcoming commission ⚓⚓⚓

Following this as well. My son is in the same boat.

DD recently received award email after we thought her application had been complete since July-- but during the first few boards her portal continued to indicate her application "at processing." A few weeks ago her recruiter contacted her: because while "at processing" an error was detected on her application. While DD communicated with her recruiter to get that problem corrected on the application, another board came & went.

Then, months after submitting her application, the portal changed to "no decision has been made." (Actually a welcome sight.)

If your portal status continues to say "at processing," contact your recruiter to help figure out why. If your portal says "No decision," that's probably fine (but you could talk to recruiter anyway.)

[Btw, when you said you were "deferred," do you mean you're admitted to a college/university but waiting to accept pending scholarship award?]

I just went back to look at the letter he received and it didn't say "deferred" as I thought it did, it says he is in an "alternate" status. Now I'm even more confused, LOL.

My guess is that means he's probably a good candidate for the scholarship but they are wanting to make sure all other stronger, more qualified candidates get awarded scholarships first?

Same thing here. I’ve been accepted to my college of choice but I was placed on the “alternates” list and just waiting to hear back.

My DS was an alternate after the first board and was notified this week of his selection. Yes it is hard to wait but keep up the faith. Best of luck to all the alternates out there on figuring out the best way to wait! Remember no news right now is good news! Means you still have a shot!!

The emails should all be out now. Folks should always check spam boxes to make sure nothing was missed. I also believe emails were sent informing people that they had not been selected this year, but that still leaves the option for College Programmer.
My DS is waiting to hear about his NROTC application. He also has an NROTC Prep application out for his #1 school. How does this work? If he is NOT selected for a 4-year, could he still have a chance at the prep program? If he IS selected for the 4-year, does that disqualify him from prep? Are the 2 programs completely separate (as far as selecting participants)? Or do they communicate in some way?
