USMMA Class of 2027 Waiting Room & Hangout

So now that it's just the waiting to report in game, any advice (both academic and non academic) for preparing to report for Indoc day as well as the first couple months of living and being a midshipman?

Prospective mids and their parents should take the time to review the document at INDOC. Note that it is from a few years ago and some of the names and perhaps the times may have changed, but essentially the content is valid and worth looking through. In fact, as you go through the document, look up the correct names for the positions and make changes. That way you will remember them; a good thing as they are part of Plebe Knowledge.

Another thing worth reviewing prior to you reporting in (July 7th) is a document titled Logging In. I've attached the link to the version for the class of 2025. I would expect that you would soon get your class specific version. Except for dates, prices, and perhaps quantities you should find the 2025 version very similar to the 2027 version. Look through it carefully, and soon! Don't get caught with surprises two weeks before reporting; as an example you need to have a valid passport or have applied for one. You may also have to make application for the Transportation Worker Identification Card. If your parents drive you to the Academy you can bring most if not all the items on page 12. If you are flying and reporting alone, you may wish to purchase one of the Plebe Kits. There is a store on campus, but they have been known to run out of key products early on. An example is sunscreen; you will spend a good deal of time outdoors in shorts and a T-shirt.

For those pursuing Engineering, try to determine if you can use some other calculator than what is suggested. You may very well have something from high school that is acceptable.

Well, my experience was that I went in completely blind. I lived too far away for a visit prior to attending. I did bring whatever was on the list that was provided and did read the literature that was sent (pre-Internet), but that didn't really paint an accurate picture. My recommendation is to enjoy your short summer, because Indoc may be a lot of things, but enjoyable isn't one of them. I also flew out on my own and had to make my own way. I guess as far as physically, try to be in shape. I mean, I was 18 years old and also a three season athlete in high school, so that wasn't too bad. The oppressive heat and humidity were quite a shock, but I hear that the barracks are now air conditioned. . . but one small item. Most of us had blistering on the tops of our ears after the haircuts and then exposure to the summer sun . . . ..

I suspect you mean CFA and I suggest you review content at the link Candidate Fitness Assessment
And the acronym changes once you are there... "To measure the general fitness of the Regiment of Midshipmen, all midshipmen must take a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) each academic term that they are at Kings Point. The PFA consists of two components, the Body Composition Assessment (BCA) and the Physical Readiness Test (PRT). Every Midshipman must pass both parts of the PFA;"

DO YOUR PAPERWORK early, there is a form SF86 which is for national security. You get a link to it, so you don't realize how long it is, I want to say it's about 140 pages and you need to give references who have known you for more than 5 years for instance and a lot of info. Don't wait on your paperwork!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Further info relative to what Pmaclax mentioned can be found at WELCOME ABOARD – NAVAL SCIENCE INDOCTRINATION PACKAGE. The letter at that link is specific to the Class of 2025 but it probably hasn't changed much. Specifically page 9 of the document provides a link to download SF-86, Questionnaire for National Security Positions. Most importantly do the paperwork/legwork up front; don't wait!

I’m sorry I said 6 but I meant 9. According to the last admissions report there were only 9 slots filled out of 260. This coming directly from admissions is pretty accurate so don’t come at me saying that my source doesn’t seem to be too reliable.
How do you get an admissions report? I am a Regional Rep for USMMA/Admissions and I can't find anywhere to get that information.

What is the USMMA applicant experience difference? My daughter was just contacted by a coach but prior to yesterday she was in the not recruited pool.
The coaches get their information from USMMA Area Reps who get their information from Congressman's meetings, tips, etc. The coaches also get their information from various websites like MaxPreps, etc. There is also a form on the website USMMA Sports under the individual sports for males and females that can be filled out and goes to the coach. Approximately 75% of the student body participates in intercollegiate sports and this number does not include intercollegiate sailing and rowing. For the states of OH, MI, IN, KY and WV - about 25 names were provided by the football coach which I followed up on for him.

AHA, it all makes a lot more sense now! My DD was shocked (very excited too) when she was contacted by a coach in December. He has been absolutely amazing!

My opinion but the best sports at KP were the waterfront sports. They compete against the top teams and much larger schools (including the other academies). Hard to recruit I guess since most high schools don't have sailing or crew.

It depends on what an individual wants to do. I know plenty of guys in my class who never saw a sailboat before KP and decided to go on the sailing team or the yacht racing team and they did quite well.

My daughter has an overnight visit to USMMA this weekend. Any parents already do this in NY? Any suggestions for hotels, parking, etc. for this type of weekend?

Our son had a visit Sunday -> Monday in Dec.; they flew into LaGuardia, got a rental car & stayed at a hotel about 25 minutes away (don’t remember the name but they got it off of Expedia). No frills. It was close to a train station to NYC - they met my husband’s cousin in NYC for a little sight seeing before the visit. It was for a recruited athlete visit - not sure if those are different from other visits but they learned a lot! He stayed with another swimmer - DS brought a goody bag of treats for him from Trader Joe’s. If students are eating on campus & visiting classes they can’t wear jeans. I think it goes fast & is packed full of info! I hope that helps - if you have other questions, maybe I can help. Good luck 🍀!

If you are flying in, get an Airbnb near LIRR train station and leave the car at home. Definitely bring food/treats for your host mid. Dress in khakis and button down shirt or polo. Bring workout clothes for PE. Bring homework or a book to read to allow your host mid homework time for at least part of the evening.
