Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting on this thread and I have a question about a medical waiver. I have just recently received an LOA , but I am under waiver review for my DODMERB for color vision. If anyone is able to give me any information if it is possible to get a waiver for color vision that would be great! Also, how long it could take to hear back about getting a waiver or not.

Just for some time frame, I have been under waiver review for almost a month now.

Thank you!!

Congrats on your LOA! I recommend you look through the DoDMERB section - I've seen several threads regarding color vision recently. Capt MJ is a great resource there (and everywhere else)!

Thank you! A couple questions, where can I find the color vision threads and how to contact or what Capt MJ has said. Sorry about asking these questions, I'm a bit lost on how to find these lol.

If you dump ‘color vision waiver’ into the search 🔍 function, tons of previous discussion will pop up for your review.

Do you see the search 🔍 icon/bar?

Thank you!
There is also a space for searching by poster/name. You can put Capt MJ in and find her posts. She is a valuable/knowledgeable resource.

We also need a waiver. I googled the code on the dodmerb report and got some really great information. It even referenced all chats on this board that contained the code. Very precise search results.

From the USMMA website - “Any prospective candidate who has been diagnosed with substandard color vision is not eligible for further consideration.” I know the USNA may give some limited waivers for color blindness but do not believe USMMA does.

I think USMMA and USCGA are the least likely to waive color vision deficiency, followed by USNA, who allows a tiny handful of waivers each year. That is my impression - and candidates in this position who see this on the USMMA website should confirm with Admissions, as a primary source.

For those needing a waiver from USMMA - were you notified in any way from admissions that they were actively pursuing a waiver? DD has seen the emails from USAFA and they are NOT pursuing a waiver at this time but she has heard nothing either positive/negative from USMMA and her portal just says "NONE" next to the medical status.

Hello and good morning!

As I talked about earlier in this thread, I was Disqualified on my medical because I scored a 3/14 on the Ishihara color vision test. But, recently it came up on my DODMerb and in an email that the waiver authority was requesting a remedial for my color vision. So yes, I believe this means that they are starting to pursue waivers or just gathering extra information at this time.
Also, my portal status for medical says "pending" and I'm not sure why it says "none" for them. Other than maybe USMMA have not received the medical yet. What is her status on the DODMerb applicant site?

There is a year old thread at https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/color-vision.84708/ that discusses color blindness waivers and options. Unfortunately not good. Remember that in general, the “sea services” (for lack of a better term), require individuals to have good visual acuity, and be able to differentiate red and green in particular for vessel navigation.

She is "under waiver review" on DoDMERB and no communication from any SAs except USAFA which was just acknowledging the DQ but nothing about requesting a waiver.

Glad it shows it on DoDMERB. I just received my remedial request from the waiver authority last friday 03 March, after having it be under waiver review since 07 February. This may just be a waiting game to see when they get around to letting her know the next step. When did DoDMERB receive her application and also give her the DQ update?

Exams were back in December. Notified of DQ on 16 Feb by DoDMERB. There were some issues with bad SSNs and multiple applications but that seems to be sorted out on the DoDMERB side. USAFA acknowledged the DQ within 48hrs but nothing from USNA/USMMA. Her interpretation on the lack of waiver request is that she is not being considered for appointment or prep school. I'm trying to keep her optimistic.

If I remember correctly I did not receive an email acknowledging the DQ from the USMMA. So I would not worry about their lack of response on that end compared to the USAFA. It's just a waiting game when they will notify you. When I originally emailed the admissions office to ask about the waiver process they said there is no specific amount of days it could take. Definitely keep her optimistic!! It's only been about 20 days since she was DQ'd, and for me it took just over a month. Make sure her spirits aren't down and that she keeps her head up!! Great things are coming soon, just gotta be patient! Which is definitely hard for me to do as well because appointments for the academy could come out any day lol

DoDMERB’s “client” commissioning programs have access to DoDMERB results any time they wish to request it, regardless of which SA or ROTC program initially requested the medical evaluation process to start.

“Under waiver review” can be confusing - I believe I saw Mr. Mullen, Deputy Director, DoDMERB, post here that it meant the SA had the results of the DQ and were reviewing whether to forward it to the waiver authority for a potential waiver.
