USAFA Waiting Thread C/O 2027

Hi Folks!

I don't know where to start! I'm pulling what's left of my hair out waiting to hear from the AFA. My kid kinda blew the fitness assessment trying to get it done with a pretty good chest infection, but otherwise he's a good candidate. A- avg. grades, lots of extra-curricular, first to solo at Aim High Flight Academy, and has his PPL. He got noms from a Congressman and a Senator, and letters of recommendation from the sitting Secretary of State of California and a 3-star AF general. Like I said, I think he's a strong candidate, but he really blew the 1 mile and a few of the other fitness tests. We're dying over here waiting. I'm interested in some of your stories--how are you handling the wait and what did you bring to the table with your application? Thanks, and good luck!
If he had failed the fitness assessment his application would have already been closed out or they would have offered a retake. It may have hurt his overall chances, but he's still in the game right now. Just my two cents.

Another question (and maybe a weird one): What's the lowest SAT score anyone's heard of for someone who was accepted in recent years? I know the 'average' on Google...

If he's got a passing score, I wouldn't put much into this. Obviously, a failure is disqualifying. I don't think the CFA is weighted near as highly as other aspects of his application, with academics at the top.

Well here’s my take, if you have any reservations about your sons application overall then he’s definitely not a shoe in for USAFA. Most parents don’t think there is any competition to their Johnny. Truth is for every person that gets accepted there is a person probably equally qualified that doesn’t. It’s just the way it is. Take care of the backup plans as B, C or D as others have said. There truly is not guessing at this point. My DS who is scheduled to graduate in June with his C/O2023 missed the big wave of appointments and then in late April got the TWE. Then in mid May got the appointment. I firmly believe everything happens for a reason it’s just at times we don’t know what those reasons are. Good luck to you and your DS in however it pans out.

I'm not sure that's quite the question you want to ask because there are lots of categories of appointees -- for example, prior service, recruited blue-chip athletes, etc. -- included in these numbers that presumably your son doesn't fit within. Nevertheless, here is the 2020-21 Common Data Set for USAFA. According to this, 19.7% of the first-year class members who submitted an SAT score (about half) scored between 1000-1199 (and 4% of the half who submitted an ACT score scored between 18-23 composite, which equates to an SAT range of 960-1150).

I really don't know how much comfort that should give you, but there it is. https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/Common-Data-Set-2020-2021.pdf (p.17 if you want to scroll right to it)

Well,

One man's comfort... lol. I don't know, either. I'm just chewing my nails to the quick over waiting for the news. I don't know what all the abbreviations stand for (DD, DS, etc), buy my son is far more calm about this than I am! He got the 'NO' from Caltech yesterday. Still waiting on USAFA, Princeton and Yale. He wants USAFA badly, so that's where our hopes are. His SAT wasn't spectacular at 1230, but his grades are solid and he's got a pretty cool life-story, so...

I appreciate the dialogue here, folks.

Same boat here ds is dear son ds is dear daughter just chilling and waiting our son got accepted to va tech and the Corp of cadets it was his number one plan b and he’s stoked about that. No twe thin white envelope means still in the game.

I thought once you received the Thin White Envelope that was that. Did they have the portal to check every 5 minutes like they do now?

Yes the portal was there. He didn’t check it much but did check it when he got an email there was an update. 1st time he was at school and texted me he didn’t get in, I remember that day sucked. 2nd time he was standing in line getting ready to walk into graduation, he texted me he received an appointment, I cried like a baby (special day). Graduation is June 1st then on to pilot training. Hang in there all it’s a rollercoaster even worse when they get in.

Things change and it seems they let you know by email before your portal is updated. Check your email. Last year, DS did not get in to summer seminar at first (March), and then later (May) received an email that he was in. The portal was never updated with that decision. DS received an email about his appointment too.

My ALO has told me on my application page it has decision/publish date of 3/14/23 @0700. He has never seen it before and it doesn’t show up for any of his other people his mentoring. Has anyone else had something like this?
0700 in which time zone? I'm guessing Academy time (MDT)?

Aren’t most updates at 10:30est? I thought that is what has been posted in the past.

We're on pins and needles at our house. DS would be 3rd gen, he's 3.9GPA at an IB school, 1490 SAT and did great on the CFA (but did not quite max it). His brother is Class of 2025. Will DS only get notified if he receives an appointment? How would he know if he is declined (and to stop waiting)? He was nom'd by Senator so he will be in a very competitive pool for that slot.

I doubt you have anything to worry about.

His portal will update with decision news, likely between now and mid-April, including no offer this cycle.

Don’t forget USAFA can choose other fully qualified nominees from the same slate, and charge those to other nom authorities they manage, if he doesn’t “win” the slate and receive an appointment charge to the Senator.

Keep a hopeful mind…and wait.

Thank you!!! 🙏

I remember receiving advice from you more than a year before, and having that magical day of receiving my acceptance letter. I am very excited to hear what happens next and to hear that you'll be joining USAFA!
