NROTC Alternate Chances and Timeline

I have been an Alternate for many months now (since October) and the waiting has been quite challenging. I would like to ask what, at this point, chances are of being awarded a scholarship (For a Tier 1 Major) and what the timeline usually is for that notification. Have any alternates been selected yet or will the notifications only go out at the very last moment? This is because acceptances are rolling in and deadlines are getting closer it would be very helpful to find out where I stand or at least know when I can expect to get that information.

Paging @GWU PNS Best to go right to the source with your question. Capt Meyers is one of the best sources for NROTC info as he is CO of GW University NROTC Program.

Board results from last week should be in front of the Admiral by middle of this week and "hopefully" notifications go out Thursday or Friday.

There has been a delay in notifications for alternates due to a ripple effect of service academy appointment notifications which was due to the DODMERB debacle. That seems to be sorting itself out now which means people who applied to both USNA or USMA and NROTC will likely shift to a service academy of they are appointed. This opens spots for NROTC.

And from there the alternates get notified. When will that happen? I think there will be some alternates notified in the next two weeks because they are above the revised cut line and have stayed above for two successive boards. With only a couple boards left it is safe to tell them they made it. An unofficial rule (meaning this isn't a guarantee but has generally proven to be true......) IF you received an alternate notification letter AND you are Tier 1 or Tier 2, then your odds are good to very good that you will be selected. If you received an alternate letter and you are Tier 3, you may get selected of a Tier 3 shifts to a service academy or different branch for ROTC.

Depending on the college, telling the admissions office you will attend if you receive the NROTX scholarship sometimes gets them to hold a spot for you. But those are the smaller colleges and not the big ones or Ivies.

I hope that helps.

Just sharing prior year experiences with this. Four years ago, our area had a big group applying for the NROTC national scholarship - some heard quickly, but many were alternates or had issues with their applications being processed - for months. In that year (2019), a wave of updates went out within a couple of days of each other in mid-April with one scholarship awarded and many not selected notifications. So buckle in - remember if you're not updated you're still in the running, which provides at least some hope. Good luck to you.

I understand the pain of the wait. My son was an alternate since the first board but was notified about a month ago that he was selected. Don't give up hope!!

Just wondering if anyone who has been waiting to hear about alternate status received any updates. Thanks -
Scuttlebutt is that we might hear some awards of scholarships by end of this week related to the last board. Though there will still be some alternates that will not hear anything for a few more weeks.

What are they waiting for then? NPP? I am unclear on what happens after the boards concludes for alternates.

I don't think they are waiting. The last board just ended last week. The awarded offers have to be checked, collected, confirmed, etc. Then they have to be OK'd by the Admiral. Takes some time. NPP and MSI is decided in later board in April.

They keep some additional alternates for later to see how the SA's and previously offered scholarships are accepted or rejected. There may be some alternates that are held on until June.

I do think that a significant amount of alternates will be informed yes/no decisions soon though.

While this isn't a specific update in terms of names or people being notified, a look at spots remaining open, compared to what we expect to see when people opt for service academies or shift to a different service branch, there will be a pull of around 150 spots from the alternate list. I believe USNA will be sending out their notifications in the next couple of weeks, and I believe NROTC will send out the final list of selectees and non-selects by mid-April. It could be sooner, but mid-April is our cut-off date.

When will the announcement go out to those selected from last week board selection?

Thanks for the information! Your posts always give me a little hope that DD gets off the alternate list 😁

Thanks for the great update. 150 spots is more than my inexperienced, untrained, and frankly small mind was guessing would be possible for the alternate list in April. I was guessing 50 spots, but that is literally a complete guess......its why I suck at gambling!

What are the odds for alternates? Why would they even make you an alternate for this program if they didn't intend on eventually granting you the scholarship? Just curious.
Also are the odds better or worse for tier 3 alternates?
