Oh dear. It has been a while since I've been on here. :frown:

If any 2014-ers have any questions about I-day or plebe life, let me know. I'm almost done with plebe year (okay, almost a full semester), and I would be more than willing to answer questions or reassure any nervous future plebes.

Go Navy, Beat the Dark Ages.

Could you go to the "Accepting Appointment" thread? There are a lot of comments about NROTC vs. Academy there and your feedback would be appreciated, especially to one of my posts on that thread!

Gee, xrunmariaxrun, not posting, been a little busy lately? And how is an Arizona girl adjusting to (i) the ocean, and (ii) snow?

My son will be visiting for the day on Saturday the 20th,could not get CVW. He'll go to the admissions briefing and whatever the standard tour is. What else should he do/see? Where can he go to chat casually with mids?

Ahhhh! You'd we surprised with how much work plebe year hands you. Right now, I HATE THE SNOW, haha. Huge blizzard right now. It's really hard to get used to cold weather, but the ocean is nice to be around during the summer, especially when you're out on the water.

On Saturdays, most of the mids are gone. 1/c and 2/c leave for liberty early in the morning. 3/c and 4/c have Saturday Morning Training (SMT) and leave for their own liberty as soon as noon hits. So finding mids to talk with about the academy will be a little hard. However, I'd be more than happy to show him around, as I usually stay on the Yard to work on hw.

If he can, your son should go through the academic buildings and even into Nimitz library. Even just going through and wandering can answer some questions. Also, professors sometime stay on the Yard on Saturdays, so if he bumps into any, your son should definitely ask questions about the academics.

ha what are your suggestions for coping with the anxiety of waiting for an appointment?

Yeah, that's a good one NY! I think lots of us would like to hear the answer to that!! Of course, it doesn't look to me like xrunmariarunx had to do much waiting if she is a plebe this year and received her appointment in Sept. '08.

Waiting is waiting, no matter the length of time. It makes all the candidates anxious. I had to wait a while though beforehand to see if I would get a medical waiver. That was the final condition to me getting an appointment. I guess realized that the academy gives the bulk of their appointments out between March and April, and if you haven't heard anything yet, then that's good news. My B/G officer told me something that really reassured me. If admissions believes that you are a strong candidate but are not yet quite up to par and there's a 50/50 vote to have you come here, then they put your application into a specific pile. That pile is looked at another date, say a month later. Then they reconsider your application. Again, no news is good news. I know it's difficult to NOT be anxious, but think positive things.

Another thing, take this time to keep submitting things for your application. Like, say you got a new leadership position---submit it.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you! That is reassuring, because my app was completed like the day I got back from summer seminar haha

Couple of questions:
1) What will a plebe want to do during PPW (should grandparents come or stay home)
2) Do you spend time with your sponsor family? How is that program.

Couple of questions:
1) What will a plebe want to do during PPW (should grandparents come or stay home).
During her PPW, my Mid wanted to:
a) Get away from the Yard
b) Go out to eat - but nothing messy
c) Go to a hotel room to get out of her Summer Whites, sleep, and generally chill out

]
2) Do you spend time with your sponsor family? How is that program.

My Mid has a FANTASTIC sponsor family. They have multiple Mids each year, and every fall the Brigade Re-form email says something like, "Welcome back to all. We'll be hoping to see all of you, although as always, our new Plebes' needs come first." The various Mids go over to have dinner some weekends, they tailgate together, and sometimes make shopping trips together. Through having the same sponsors, my Mid now has multiple "sponsor sisters" and "sponsor brothers," and that's how they refer to each other. Although the sponsor program is only officially for Plebes, many Plebe-sponsor relationships last a lifetime. My Mid's will be like that.

Sponsor relationships don't always work out. Another friend only met his sponsors once. He simply went to hang out with his roommates' sponsors, so it wasn't as though he had to stay behind while everyone else went to visit sponsors. So, even though sponsors aren't always a perfect match, "no Plebe gets left behind."

Yes. During Plebe Summer, their cell phones will be returned to them for their designated phone call times. The past few summers, they have been allowed three calls, usually on Sundays. The expected call time windows will be publicized during parent briefs on I-day.

During the academic year, access to cell phones MAY vary by company. My Mid's company let Plebes have their cell phones back wiith no real usage restrictions - except the upper class "trained" the Plebes enough that about the only time mine could call was on weekends, or occasionally just before lights out.Plebes are NOT allowed to talk on cell phones while walking around, so they can't just call home while walking to class.

Cell phone reception in Bancroft varies hugely from one room to another, or even within one room. In Mid's current room, cell phone signal (AT&T) can be had only while standing on a chair in one spot, or in the roommate's rack. Zero-one bar is still enough for texting, so you may want to add text to your service if you don't have it.

Cell Phones

Thanks for that info. We text a lot now so I was hoping there would be a chance for that during the Plebe year.

I'm glad you're back xrunmariarunx! :)...
Like she said there is a lot of current plebes who would be more than happy to answer questions on pretty much anything so ask away or PM us! I'm sure we can get a couple of our other shipmates on here too.
For everyone out there waiting I know you don't want to hear this becaue I didn't want to either but like xrunmariarunx said no news is good news. So, instead of hovering over the mail box every day go spend time with your friends and family! There is only 105 days until our first class graduate and about two months later you all will be coming in! -That is not a lot of time; so be smart and safe but have fun. Oh and better yet go work out! :)
And if you don't get an appointment this year- do not stress! To even have been considered to receive a nom is amazing! Our class had over 15,000 apps yours is already over 17,000! So if you want to come here go to college for a year do awesome there continue with your ECAs and sports and reapply.

Thank you guys for giving solace to those who are currently where you came from in terms of admissions.

Few questions
To xrunmariarunx: What part of Plebe Summer in specific made you want to quit?

To any: What are things during Ac year that occupy Plebes for the most part?

I think that number is valid based upon the increase in the number of candidates on my roster this year vs last year.

They told us at CVW a couple weekends ago that they were at more than 18,000 during the admissions briefings.

I really appreciate the plebes who have taken the time out of their very busy schedules to answer questions and to console us!!

Having some idea of when my son might be able to call or text (provided, of course, that he receives an appointment) would be wonderful. Didn't have anything like that when my older son was in boot. That was the longest 9 weeks of my life!

Here's a funny workout strategy my son has employed. Whenever his best friend texts "haha", my son has to do twenty push ups and twenty sit ups. I suggested that if he would run around the block everytime he receives a text, he could be an Olympic marathon runner!

It was the way they made you feel guilty about everything wrong that you do. Maybe it was just my company, but I hated failing at everything we did, even the simplest of things. And I hated the fact that I couldn't think for myself anymore. Literally, at the end of plebe summer, I felt STUPID. I had a hard time doing simple calc and chem questions. It's kind of hard to explain.

Even now, I'm having major doubts with even staying here.

And your second question, it's actually a number of things, and it will vary according to each company. Pro-knowledge takes up a lot of time. If you struggle with a subject, that will take up a lot of time too. If you know now that you have difficulty in a particular subject like Calculus, I advise registering for an extra-help class right off the bat once you're here.
