I read on the USMMA appointments website that for every six months spent on a naval vessel, you’ll get “bonus points” on your application, does anyone know the specifics of this? I have about 13 months total of sea time, and I submitted my enlisted training jacket and other proof of sea time, I was just curious if anyone else has seen anything about this, or if anyone knew how heavily it was weighted.

If you are academically qualified and come from an under represented state based upon the vacancy allotment, you have the best chance to get in.

Do you have an incorrect link URL? What you cite has no mention of prior service time.

It’s at the very end of the first section. It states “Bonus points are awarded to candidates with at least six months of sea service aboard merchant or naval vessels.”

Question, it states on this link that principal appointments will be invited in mid-April for a briefing program. I believe my son is a principal nom for our state. He is still undecided but the interest had increased significantly over the last couple of weeks. He is about ready to hit the accept button. My question, what is included or involved with this briefing program? How many days? We would have to cover the costs and we live in AZ (it is not cheap to get to NY). Plus, he's still in high school with no breaks until graduation. Is this a must attend or more of you'll figure it out on day 1 of arrival for school/training? Any insights would be appreciated.

He will figure things out. A visit is nice, but it can be cost prohibitive for those who live far away. My DS had already made up his mind before visiting. When we visited in April, there were about 20 plebe candidates on the visit. It was nice for me to see the school in person, but we did not learn anything we did not already know. I would let your DS enjoy his remaining time in high school rather than stressing out over missing classes. Save your money so you can visit him for parents weekend.

Thank you. We have not visited there but we believe all things happen for a reason. This is an amazing opportunity that many will never get a chance to experience. He is very excited about his acceptance.

Long ago, in another century, many of us never saw KP until we reported in, parents included. There was no internet, and the Academy brochure probably had about 25 pages of pictures. I had classmates, many of which gathered together, and took trains, buses, etc. to the Academy.

Neither myself or my parents visited prior to Indoc. In fact, my parents never came out. I remember getting a brochure and a slide show which hardly gavel an accurate picture. I flew out on my own, Got a room at the Bayberry (with three others, unbeknownst to me) and took a cab to school that morning.

Your parents “…never came out.” Not even for graduation?

Nope. In fact, I told them that it wasn't necessary.
My father would never have gone for that! He was a former Chief Petty Office in the Navy (WWII) and took pride in putting my ensign boards on my shoulders, throwing me a salute, and for which, in proper Navy tradition, I gave him a silver dollar.
