Is it allowed for a plebe to bring a Bible to plebe summer? I know there won't be a lot of time to read but even just a verse or two at night would be amazing
A little follow up question that I have been wondering for PS… how exactly do Sundays work? Are you able to go to church? Do you have time for a Bible study, prayer, etc?
From what I learned, Plebe summer makes a lot of converts for Friday night shabbat services (to get into AC and away from detailers along with better food options) and Catholic mass on Sunday (AC/no detailers and the occasion donut). In the academic year it reverts to only those who are interested for religious purposes.A little follow up question that I have been wondering for PS… how exactly do Sundays work? Yes, and you are also issued an optional bible if you want one provided. There are Friday night services and Sunday morning services. Is it allowed for a plebe to bring a Bible to plebe summer? I know there won't be a lot of time to read but even just a verse or two at night would be amazing
Not only are you able to go to church, but you get to attend services at (IMHO) one of the most beautiful chapels in the world with service lead by the awesome Navy chaplains who get the privilege of being assigned to a SA (USNA, USCGA and USMMA). They also have several other worship related gatherings and affiliate groups. Our understanding is that you can bring a journal, a Bible and one other book to read when you report in, but as Capt MJ said, take something small, not a family heirloom. The chaplains are available for the mids’ spiritual and emotional needs, and offer counseling, religious services, and facilitate the needs of all faiths and are an invaluable resource not just at the SAs, but also in the fleet. They are the only ones who have privileged (100% confidential) communication and even if the midshipman, cadet, sailor, Marine, Coast Guardsman, etc is of a different faith than the chaplain, the chaplains are still available to care for all of them.A little follow up question that I have been wondering for PS… how exactly do Sundays work? Yes those plebs who would never go to a church as a civilian can at times be found at Jewish services on Friday and Mass on Sunday and if there was a Saturday service mine might be there as well. From what I learned, Plebe summer makes a lot of converts for Friday night shabbat services (to get into AC and away from detailers along with better food options) and Catholic mass on Sunday (AC/no detailers and the occasion donut). One of my son's company-mates during PS would go to Shabbat every Friday, where their parents would also go (since they were local) .......... sneaky way to see your kid every week during PS!!! They didn't become more religious during the summer, but the family overall did take advantage of the system a bit.
Lol, I think I remember like 25% of my company temporarily becoming Jewish over plebe summer. A couple hours a week of not getting yelled at was tempting.
.The kids will have their fair share of parents imposing themselves on PS. I've never understood rhat. My kid said it felt like they were in a zoo with all the onlookers.
We're local (within town liberty radius), but this is his journey, not mine. We dropped him off on I-Day, and picked him up for PPW. Otherwise, we left him alone and played "Where's Waldo" with all the pics.
Don't worry, your kids will be able to worship however they are comfortable. The military is rigid, but it is also inclusive and values freedoms.

Just wanted to share what my two Mids did. Yes, you can go to church every Sunday during PS. Mine went to Bible Study (Officer's Christian Fellowship/OCF) before Chapel and then went to Chapel. They both joined OCF and it has been the biggest blessing EVER!! The leaders are incredible. Retired 06. The Mids go on retreats up to White Sulphur Springs every Fall and Spring (the best escape for a Plebe). One of mine is going on an Easter Retreat next weekend to WSS. OCF is located at most military bases as well so you always have Brothers and Sisters where you get orders to. I can't say enough about OCF. I think the current Plebe class has 40 Plebes in OCF. My boys best friends at the Academy are all from OCF!! Also, regarding bringing your Bible on IDay. Mine did not. They brought paperwork, calculator, retainer (ha ha ha...mom made them!) and new sneakers on their feet. They didn't need to stress about anything else and wanted a small bag to carry. The sack they will be issued with all their clothes, etc. is so heavy. I brought their Bibles on Parent's Weekend. I didn't want to risk mailing it in case it got lost. They were issued a Bible so they had one during PS it just wasn't theirs from home. You can mail them a devotion in their first package if you want. Just know they are so exhausted maybe having a few verses in that package that they can put up on their bulletin board or by their head in the rack is enough just b/c when their head hits their pillow they are out. Hope that is helpful!!A little follow up question that I have been wondering for PS… how exactly do Sundays work? Are you able to go to church? Do you have time for a Bible study, prayer, etc?
Thank you so much for the information!! I will 100% be looking into OCF once I'm on the Yard! It sounds like an incredible group.Just wanted to share what my two Mids did.
