Hi, I'm filling out the online form for the TWIC, on the 2024 booklet, it says "When pre-enrolling, indicate the purpose for the card is for employment as a Merchant Mariner and that the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is the employer." On the TWIC website, it's asking for my employment status, if I select "pre-employment/unemployed", I do not have the option to pick USMMA as the employer, I can only select occupation as a merchant mariner. I can only select USMMA as my employer if I select "employed" for my employment status. Which one should I pick? Employed or unemployed? Please look at the pictures i have attached below.

I’m glad you shared this information! I just made an appointment for DS to go to the location to get this done. Now I see you can fill out the application online. So thanks!!

Is it quicker to just go in person to get your TWIC? Will they give you your card on the spot unlike the online process where it takes a while to get mailed in?

No, you cannot get your TWIC card faster in person. It usually takes just a couple weeks and is a pretty painless process.

@big_boatss No. Because the TSA needs to conduct a background check before they will issue the card..

My DS did it in person. Was painless in person but they still mailed everything to him. That was back in 2018 though....so not sure if it's improved?

When can people go for this? If I have my appointment can I go now or do I have to wait on USMMA?

@Pmaclax, have you accepted your appointment? Once you do, you can start the application process for your TWIC card. See https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic for steps to proceed. The time it will take to get your appointment and get your card will vary depending on your location. By the way, you can post your appointment on the appointment thread on this site.

So if you have your appointment and have accepted, should we take initiative and fill out these forms? Or will we be prompted by admissions/the academy in coming months to do so?

TY. I’m going to be at KP this week for visit and speaking with Coach at KP. Will be making final decision this weekend and post in thread with final decision.

In an effort to not start a new thread, I would like to bring this back up. My DS in in the process of applying for the TWIC. In step 3 it asks "Are you currently serving, or have you ever served, in the Armed Forces of the United States". Going to USMMA, how should he answer this?

Unless DS is a veteran than the answer is no. USMMA is not part of the Armed Forces and applying to or acceptance by USMMA does not impart any status related to the Armed Forces until one is in receipt of a DOD ID Card.
