Sophomore: ask me anything

How do cadets go off campus to relax on Sundays?
Are there shuttle buses to take you to the airports (COS or DEN)?

I'm sure the other folks will have other great options as well, but my Sundays are typically more of an ease into the week, sometimes I go to my sponsors and sometimes I try and get ahead on work. Mitchell Hall sometimes has make-your-own waffles(One of my favorites) on Sunday mornings, which can be nice to look forward to. There are shuttle busses during break periods but there is also a ridesharing platform for cadets that sometimes has rides on non break periods and typically you can find someone else who is going.

How was the boxing class? Anything to be concerned about from an injury/concussion standpoint? I've read several other threads on the topic, but I thought you might be a good person to ask. Thanks.

How was Basic Cadet Training like? I know it lasts 6 weeks, but what are you allowed to do in time period between when it end in August and when the academic year starts in September? Like are you allowed to fly back home during that time if you're not participating in any sports? Thanks I want to know if incoming cadets get a summer vacation.

I'll answer about the summer vacation with a firm NO. There is no vacation or time away from USAFA after Cadet Basic just as there is not one for the similar yet different initial summer training at USNA and USMA.

26 parent here...doolies were not allowed to leave base until parents weekend, except for maybe a squadron activity/dinner. Absolutely nothing with family. If you come for ADay you can see your cadet for about 2 hours but you must stay on base. The only exception I know of is family medical emergency that must be approved and possibly on Sundays only for specific religious services not offered on base. After parents weekend they will receive Sunday and weekend passes.

Basically, their summer vacation this year is anytime before I-day 😂

Also, the academic year starts in early August, not September as mentioned. Last year classes started August 10th. I would expect August 8th or 9th this year, but the calendar is not finalized, yet.

The days between the end of BCT and classes starting are known as transition days, with lots of briefings and equipment/uniform issues.

I definitely wouldn’t say anything to be overly concerned about. A few people get concussions every year but given how one thousand people do it every year the number is surprisingly low.

Do they qualify with rifle and handgun or just rifle at Jack's Valley?

When do IC sports tryouts occur? I've sent in the recruiting questionnaire at the beginning of the '27 application process. There was some exchange with a coach over email. My stats at the time were obviously not D1 level and the correspondence ended. I've since gained an appointment on other merits. Curious if I should be reaching out to the coach again before arriving, or wait for a tryout call after arriving.

Have your stats improved since he ghosted you? If they haven’t improved to the D1 level then it’s probably not worth your time. If it’s a sport that takes walk-ons then maybe it’s worth it if you are close but if you aren’t close to the times, move on and maybe do this sport as a club member if it’s available.

When did you get your appointment and are most things you read on here true?

Thanks.
I received an LOA in early November and accepted an appointment in early December. I would say a pretty solid chunk of info on here is good advice and worth following, though occasionally there is something that makes me chuckle in absurdity.

No injuries for me. I have heard of some people getting concussions, but no one in my class did. You wear protective headgear.

For weekends, cadets can borrow cars from cadets in the upper two classes or have their sponsor family pick them up. There are shuttles to the airport for thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break.
