How do they know?

I've always been curious about this - how do certain colleges with aerospace specialties know to reach out specifically to me? Other than resumes that I send out to schools I want to attend, nothing about me really gets out there that identifies me personally.

The reason I bring it up here is because a college just tried to recruit me by email because I received an AFROTC scholarship. They certainly offer quite a few nice things to AFROTC cadets, but I've never even heard of it before (it is legitimate though).

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to get notices from colleges looking for a specific candidate, but I just can't figure out how they know.

Anyone have some insight about this?

I don't have an answer for you but my daughter received an email from Baylor today congratulating her on her AFROTC scholarship.....and she never even thought about Baylor.

She also recieved something from AROTC at Duke last Fall right after she applied for an AROTC scholarship. The military must share this information among their recruiters.

Yep, that's who got in contact with me as well.

My son got one from Baylor re the AFROTC today too. I thought it was particularly funny because of how the message got cut off in the email listing in Outlook. It said, "Congratulations on your AFRO..."! :shake:

It's just the beginning........

My son got quite a few emails and pamplets from various colleges once he was awarded his scholarship a couple years ago. Most were from places we never heard of and most were offering some sort of additional incentive, like room and board scholarships. Most of them were fairly small schools too.

While I don't know for sure, I suspect the local cadre provides the admission staff the list of scholarship recipients.

Not only do the local cadre look at who got scholarships, if you've ever taken the SAT/ACT there was probably a section to mark what you were interested in. I think most schools can look at those as well.

USAF Type 1 = Phone rings...

When S#1 received an AFROTC type one, the phone began to ring from Units all over the country typically Private universities: USC, Baylor, etc.

However many colleges email you, I can't be nearly as bad as the number that email you after taking the PSAT and signing up for SSS? Geez, I must have received emails from at least 100+ colleges by now and the list is growing.. What's funny however is none of the colleges (except one) that I want to go to have done this (even the ones I haven't yet set up rapport or request info with).

It could be anything...maybe you filled something out on the PSAT that you wanted to be an aero major, lists of AFROTC recipients, etc. People then sell the lists to colleges, who then just auto send it.

Well, specifically as it relates to the ROTC units, I'm sure every PMS gets a list (or at least has access to) the list of candidates that get scholarships awarded to them. I assume they also can tell if you're not committed to a certain college yet and if that's the case, they reach out to you.

I know the University of Portland sent us a letter even before the scholarship was awarded. We hadn't even ever heard of them before that but after doing alot of research, we included them on our list of schools. As time went on, we bumped them to #1  They have been in some sort of contact with us about every (2) weeks and my daughter is there now on a campus visit. Barring some major issue I'm unaware of so far, I expect her to commit to the program there this week.

On the flip side, there are some programs who have never contacted us. Even schools on her application and susbsequent scholarship awards list. I know some of these programs are really busy but the University of Michigan was very active in recruiting my daughter and I know they have 400+ trying to get in their unit. Yet, a smaller (14000 students) school unit hasn't even tried to contact us after their school/unit was listed on her scholarship award notice.
