Current Doolie Q/A

last year there was one in April, but I’m not sure if there will be one this year. I’d have to imagine there will be, but if you reach out to admissions they can give you a more accurate answer.
Thank you, DD will reach out to them today.

I had a lot of questions when I was getting ready for BCT & Doolie year so I figured I could help anyone who may be in the same situation. Feel free to ask questions about BCT & four Degree year and I will do my best to try and answer them.
What should we pack for our parents to bring after A-day (clothes, room stuff, school supplies)? If we are an IC, do we get to practice during basic and should we pack anything for our sport?

You will have the opportunity to go to the c-store during basic, and during transition week to purchase any school supplies you need. It may be cheaper to purchase it from a Walmart or something similar, but you can check the pricing during basic and determine what you want to do once you get your phone back. As far as room stuff goes, you are pretty limited. You can have 2 personal items on your desk, but other than that most doolies rooms are barren. You will have IC practices during basic. I am not sure what sport you are playing, but I'm sure if you coordinate with your coach they will let you know what to bring. All of the ICs practice in the morning while everyone else does morning PT, and they never brought any equipment down, so I assume they just left it in the locker rooms.

Bringing clothes is up to you. Do a lot of doolies have them, yes. are you supposed to, nope. If you get caught with them you will probably be given a form 10, get scrubbed, and your squad will be put in service dress. However, most, if not all doolies have them hidden somewhere. It's more of a cat and mouse game. If you are willing to take the risk, then go for it, but I wouldn't recommend bringing them before Christmas break.

Bought underwear/boxer for DS and was told my West Point parents that the underwear should not have logo/brand on it. The underwear we bought have names like Hanes/Under Armour on the elastic band around the waist. Will that be acceptable during BCT ?

Nobody actually cares about the underwear you bring. The only time cadre have issues with boxers is if they start showing because no one wants to see your crack

I just flashed on standing in a uniform inspection formation on hot cement in Navy summer whites (no longer made of lovely cool cotton but a 100% synthetic polyester twill), back in the 20th C., directly behind “Leftenant” Clive NameRedacted, Royal Navy, helo pilot on exchange duty - who was wearing his full-on Brit all-cotton, ultra-thin tropical white uniform with shorts and white knee-high socks, and quite clearly, boxers with large red hearts dancing all over the butt. He knew exactly what he was doing, and our entire row was trying not to laugh, but not succeeding. Cheeky sod! 😉

Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Still makes me laugh. Clive and I are still in touch.

Last weekend at the founder's day parade I saw one guy who had underwear that said "Woof" in big bold letters underneath the semi-transparent parade pants

Haha yes those are there squads running shorts, not sure if was intentional but it was hilarious

awesome thank you thank you!! Also another question I have is with your weight. When I weighed in for the academy, I weighed about 168 and the max for my height is 169. Since then I weigh now about 171, but still in great shape. When you make it during I-day, do the check your medical weight to see if you still meet the requirements?
There is a saying in the Air Force, “if the min wasn’t good enough, it wouldn’t be the min”. After many years in the Air Force, I’ll give you a better one. “Don’t draw any unnecessary attention to yourself”. Why start with a target on your back? Absolutely lose the weight.
Don’t give them a possible reason to send you packing. Go in at least down to #165 also after that I’m sure you will be down around 155 towards the end of BCT then try to stay right at #160 your entire doolie year.
I cannot stress enough how wrong bigrod and tigers2023 are. Being over the "max" weight is a non-issue, assuming you're in decent shape and can pass a tape test. BMI has no correlation to fitness, and it's hard to be muscular without being over max BMI. You will not draw "extra attention" for being 2 (or way more) pounds over. You should not try to lose weight at the expense of muscle and fitness. Worrying about your weight instead of your fitness is unhealthy and dangerous.

On a similar note, it bugs me on this forum how many people invent answers and state them as fact. Especially parents, and even old grads, do not often have a good sense of how things currently work at the academy. Take all things with a grain of salt

After Basic, can your two personal items be 1. A desktop fan 2. Small extension cord for said fan that also has phone charger on it? Are there a certain personal item you see the most of?

I said this on another post somewhere, but pack cough drops for I-day. Jack's Hack is real and the c-store was always out of cough drops. Maybe they will be in stock this summer but why take the chance. They weigh very little. As far as underwear for BCT, go cheap and bring more than recommended. Laundry has a way of getting mixed up or lost. If you are an IC you will be able to get a form for a mini fridge so your parents can bring that to you on A-day or at parent's weekend.

Neither of those are actual "personal items". The actual term that the doolie should have said earlier is "memorabilia". Different squads will be more or less strict on what is considered memorabilia as it is defined solely by a list of several items that are not memorabilia and everything else can be considered memorabilia. Generally things that are actually functional should not be considered memorabilia, memorabilia is something that is just there for decoration such as a framed picture or a lego set (pictures and patches on the corkboard are also not considered memorabilia).

I read somewhere about a desktop fan too, I thought the room have AC.
1. Why do you need a fan ? If required one, I am thinking of the one from Costco that is compact and can rotate and also move up and down.
2. Thinking of getting a surge suppressor/extension cord with multiple plug connector too.
3. During BCT, is it better to use manual disposable shaver and toothbrush or just bring the electric ones. I'm afraid they might have limited access to plug in socket during 2nd beast.

Thanks.

1) FYI Costco is having a sale right now on the woozoo desktop fan (29.99), which works great for DS (even with AC, DS says it can get pretty stuffy). We brought it to him on Parent’s Weekend. We limited the amount of things we brought for him on A day because for A day, the parents weren’t allowed to help bring items to the dorms and it can be a long walk for the cadets to bring items to their dorm. For Parent’s Weekend, parents can back and forth to the dorm room as much as they want as long as they are with their cadet.
2) DS said he didn’t need any surge protector or extension cords as they were either provided or available in the store.
3) DS brought manual razors to BCT and then we be brought him his electric toothbrush and shaver on PW.

Current appointee handbook mentions 12 V-neck (white) t-shirt to bring to BCT. Why is it V-neck instead of round neck ? Watching the Documentary "A Year in Blue - Inside the Air Force Academy" everyone have round neck t-shirt under their OCP. Am I missing something ? Are the round neck t-shirt provided by USAFA then ?

The V-neck t-shirt is required by AFI's for blues (under the blue uniform shirt).
