When is the best time for my parents to come to WP?

Hi, I just was appointed to the 2014 class and had a question I haven't seen yet on this board.

Due to financial reasons, my parents can't come see me very often, but they did want to make one trip up to West Point during the first semester. I know most parents come to R-day, but to me I think it would be better for them to come once I know the school and can show them around and whatnot. Is A-day a good time to come to visit? Originally I was planning on them coming plebe-parent weekend but I read somewhere that it was in March. Is that true?

I guess my question is just what is the best time for my parents to come during the first semester that would give me the most time to spend with them. Such as R-day, A-day, or some random weekend that doesn't have anything planned.

Also, during Winter/Summer breaks, are your flights paid for back and forth? I wanted to know because my sister is a flight attendant and can put me on her buddy pass list if not.

Another quick question: Can I still bring things that are not allowed during CBT but are allowed during the academic year? (i.e. contacts, iPod, books, etc.) Or should I just have my family ship it?

I've never even met someone from a SA so it's all quite new to me,

Thank you!

1) Parent-Plebe Weekend was during first semester before. This year, however, it is in March (cutting into our Spring Break ) A-Day would be the best time for them to come first semester assuming Parent-Plebe weekend is in March again for you guys.

2) No, USMA only pays for your transportation for required events like Army/Navy and Summer Training.

3) You can bring anything in your bags but if they are not authorized for Beast, they will be left in storage and may possibly break if you don't protect anything fragile you bring. I brought my cell phone but left it in a protective case.

Am remembering "box boy" at USAFA. If you bring something extra to R-day, do you have tocarry it around all that first day?

Back in the Old Corps, plebes didn't get Spring Break at all - that whole week was Plebe/Parent Week. So you're not getting too much sympathy here! Although some of us were Corps Squad anyway and spent the week at NCAA's in Orlando - yep, life was rough! :shake:

yes. You also risk it getting lost while in storage.

2009 marked the return of PPW to the weekend prior to spring break. It's not so bad. You will be released on Sunday am. The worst thing is the weather is not so nice.
Of course, there is a new Commandant and soon to be a new Superintendent so the date could change again going forward.

Yes, I didn't know you meant you would be bringing large items. There will be a room at one of the stations in R-Day where you will transfer the items you are bringing to Beast from your civilian bag to an issued bag. Your civilian bag then goes into a pile with the remaining items on it. "Box Boy" made the mistake of bringing a large item outside his bag but if you bring something extra in your civilian bag, then it won't really be noticed. It's your call, if it is something large or that would go separate from your civilian bag then just have it brought later.

Guess they figured leaving Plebes in charge for a whole week wasn't such a good idea.

A-Day would be my first chioce since you and your parents haven't seen each other for 6 weeks. We really wanted to lay eyes on our Plebe and make sure that he was OK ! Only thing about A-Day is that you won't be released until after the parade which will be around noon. They can spend the rest of the day/evening with you. They can see you on Sunday also.

My second choice would be to have them come on a football weekend. They can see you Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Football weekends are fun at WP. Also, you can sit with them during the game instead a standing with the rest of the corps.

Another question about visitors other than parents

We will come visit our cadet for A-day and then again for PPW, but we have a family friend who is attending his 20th Reunion at West Point in September. He and his wife have graciously stated they would love to take our son to the football game that weekend (at WP) and/or to dinner with them while they are there. Is that allowed?

Oh yes! He will be allowed to sit with them at the game. He just has to tell them he is sitting with an "old grad". Cadets can sit with their parents as well - the seats are bleachers so they can usually squeeze in.
After the game he will have walking privileges so he will be able to go to dinner off post - in Highland Falls. They will have a great time!
