Does anyone know if you need a congressional nomination in order to be considered for a Falcon Foundation Scholarship?

No, you do not. My son is a current Falcon Scholar at MMI and he did not have a nomination for USAFA. He did have one for USNA, but that didn't pan out. Best of luck to you!

You do not need to have a nomination, but I think you need to be pilot qualified. This isn't a free pass, even Falcons don't get appointments. Prep school is no cake walk.

You need a nomination, but the Falcon Foundation will "find" a nomination for you if you can't get one (as long as you applied to all possible sources). I've also been told by a general that I would have to "really screw up" to not get appointment. But yes, there are still Falcons who don't get appointments. I hear it's mostly from low test scores.

And then there was one of my candidates several years ago that received a "D" in English at NMMI...and never raised it. He had already received his appointment because his SAT scores did precisely what they needed to do: they JUMPED upwards!

And then that "D" grade...that progressed to an "F" for the semester.

And then the appointment was yanked.

So...if you receive the FF offer to go someplace to make yourself MORE qualified, consider this a GIFT and do NOT be complacent (he was) as it can bite you hard!!

On the positive side...the results can be wonderful: I was rejected for the class of 1982 at USAFA/USNA/USMA/USCGA/USMMA.

After my "tour of duty" at Northwestern Prep (WAAAAY back when it was in Mound, MN) I was offered appointments to the class of 1983 at USAFA/USNA/USMMA/USMA...alternate to USCGA (they're TOUGH!)

Re:

You do not need a nomination, and you don't need to be academically qualified for USAFA. I attended NWP last semester as a Falcon; it's no cakewalk but it is TOTALLY worth it. If there is anyway you can get a foundation scholarship, do everything you can to get and accept it.

I misread the previous posts when I said you needed a nom. You don't need a nom to receive the scholarship, but you do need one the following year.

I am current a prep at NMMI on the Falcon Foundation Scholarship. It is a good experience, and is clearly effective as 9 out of the 10 cadets here on the Falcon Scholarship have received their appointments to the class of 2014.

Is this right? The prep school requires a pilot's license?

Also, Steve

even if the AF pays for the scholarship, you can apply to the other SAs?

Thanks

dragon6,

To receive the Falcon Scholarship, candidates must have been found to be medically qualified to to be a pilot. The prep schools themselves do not care about this.

Falcon Scholars cannot apply to other academies or even ROTC.

I would ask where your last comment comes from?

The reason I ask is there never was such a restriction and I've not been told there is one now. MOST of the FF folks I knew when I was one, and since, applied to multiple SA's, but their first choice obviously was USAFA.

But we never had any "you can't apply anywhere else, or even ROTC" restriction.

Is that now written in the FF scholarship agreement?

We were told that the academies have an unofficial agreement not to accept the others' prep schoolers. Also, I know a Falcon who tried to apply to ROTC, and the ROTC admissions officer he talked to said he couldn't. The only thing the FF specifically told us was that if we denied our appointment, we would have to pay the $5000 back.

The "if offered an appointment and you refuse it, you must pay back..." I know well. It also takes effect if you do something stupid like flunk out of PS!

I had a candidate do that at NMMI! He had all "A" grades and one "F" and that was that.

I haven't heard from anyone at the other academies (I sent some queries out) about this...so far nothing. If I hear anything definitive, I'll post it.
