Q & A - Norwich University

Thank you again for your willingness to answer questions!! Our DD is starting to think about majors and course planning for next year. If you dont mind sharing, which major did you select? And do you have any knowledge/feedback/suggestions regarding either the majors in biochem or Studies in War and Peace (which seems to be a new major)? Is it unusual to double major? Thanks for any feedback you may have, and good luck with finals!!

sorry- one more question- what is a typical course load/number of credit hours for a freshman? my husband and I went to a small liberal arts college where the expectation was four classes ( + labs if relevant) per semester, so we weren't really one a credit hour system. thank you!

My son is a senior majoring in Studies in War and Peace. This major has been around since at least 2018 when my first of two students began attending Norwich. It’s a major that combines Political Science, History and Military History. A few required courses and the freedom to choose others from a large list. Happy to answer any other questions you may have. My son has a double minor, so a double major is doable, especially if you take 18 hours per semester and/or add summer school classes. I’d say 15 hours is a usual class load.

Thank you!!! This is super helpful! What is he studying for his two minors?
Leadership and Philosophy. Also, Studies in War and Peace hosts a center which brings in speakers, study abroad’s, etc. And if your daughter is interested in this major, also check out Model UN. My son is very involved in Model UN and they go to the big international conference each year hosted by Harvard.

Boots! Are the ones that Norwich recommends any good? Would like to get them soon so they get broken in. Should we get the temperate ones and winter ones now or wait for winter ones until needed?

Thanks for starting this thread. All of the questions above have helped us here too.
My son got Belleville's to start and they seem to have held up well. He didn't get the winter boots until October before FTX weekend and he didn't even end up using them then. He bought the Rocky's from the campus uniform store because that's what they had and they were expensive, but he says worth every penny for keeping his feet warm and dry.

With boots it's going to be a bit like any other sneakers or shoes - people's feet are different so what's comfortable for one isn't for another.

Also, my son likes the fox river boot socks.

Just my opinion, but I'd wait on the winter boots if feasible for you because in Rook life everything has to be just so and it's probably just easier to have one less thing to worry about having organized.

Criminal Justice is a popular major and my son has said that a lot of cadets have a double major or multiple minors. I'm sure there are tougher majors than CJ there so it might depend on the major. My son managed 18 credits his first semester. There is a lot of study time built into their schedule (assuming not on a sports team because that probably makes a difference) so it hasn't been too overwhelming most of the time.

Could you minor in SWAP at Norwich? My DD is a Biology major right now but is interested in the SWAP program as well. She eventually would like a career in medicine but wants to commission after Norwich for at least 4 years. I guess she could major in SWAP and minor in Biology or Health Sciences and still get all the pre-recs needed for PA school or medical school.

Currently there is not a minor in SWAP. However, your daughter could minor in History and take the same History courses that would be offered for a SWAP major. Some of the basic History courses also count as a general requirement to graduate, so double bonus.

@Michael_T another question about linen service ... what about the campus dry cleaning program? do the uniforms require dry cleaning? and is there a minimum they are required to be cleaned? If you don't get the campus service, where do you take them to be cleaned? Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry for the late reply! I haven't really been active on here. I personally don't recommend the dry-cleaning service, as it's really viewed as a waste of money. By all means, if you think you want to use it, feel free to purchase!

In terms of washing uniforms, many of them simply don't require dry-cleaning, such as the OCPs, or the Summer Bs/Winter Bs, simply suffice in the washing-machine, and ironing them right after.

Things like my tunic, and more delicate items, I was only able to use them like 3 or 4 times in the entire year, so feel free to wash at your own discretion!

Hope this helps

Thank you Michael - it helps a lot!

Hi! Our son will be a rook this Fall ‘24 and we’re trying to figure out if he’ll have time to come home for Thanksgiving or if we should bring Thanksgiving to him (VRBO nearby and feed him and his battle buddies). Since he’s a rook - is this even allowed? Just trying to plan ahead - thanks so much!!

My son was a rook this year and was home for a week for Thanksgiving. Break was 11/18-11/25. I would definitely plan on getting him home for it. That week will be a great chance for him to get away and reset. If you need any advice on travel let me know. We also have some Facebook groups that are helpful for getting rides and advice on flying in and out etc…

Before Thanksgiving break though, there is family weekend. It’s 10/4-10/6 this year. I’ve already booked a house and I suggest booking something for that as soon as you can. It will be the first time you’ll see your Rook after drop off. It’s a great time! Go to all of the events if you can get into town Thursday night is best. You can eat with your rook for lunch that Friday and there will be events to do to Friday afternoon and Saturday. You can have them until 7pm Sunday before they have to be back.

If you have questions on the packing list let me know too. Enjoy every second leading up to this adventure. It’s an awesome, awesome ride and he has chosen very wisely with Norwich!!

Our son is an MS3-junior. He flies home every time they have a break.
Parents Weekend is a good time to visit. We go every year.
Sugarbush or Warren is a good place to stay lots of air bnb. But book soon they sell out fast.
Rooks have to wear a uniform 50 miles from campus in public they will not want to go eat out. They will be sleep deprived so all they will want to do is eat and sleep.
I get a condo we have hosting cadets without families every year. These boys become one of your own.

Thank you SO much for the info! We live in Washington DC so we’ll get to as many events as we can. It might be the case (like family weekend) where my husband goes and I stay home to watch our son’s kid sisters but at least he’ll have family there. We’ve flown into Burlington out of Wash DC (easy non-stop) and we’re just traveling back now from another visit via Amtrak. It’s nice there are options! We’ll definitely book now for family weekend 👍

Thank you so much for the info and AirB&B locations! Understood on the uniform regs - makes sense. Probably best for a hotel and ordering food in - time for dad and son to have together 😊

Comfort Inn in Barre 10 or 12 miles is good hotel. Ask for Norwich discount. There’s a Hilton in Montpillier with a $$ steakhouse on 1st floor.
