I am currently marked as in "Hold" status and have been since October. After finally getting my waiver granted on the 28th of March, I have been in hopeful wait for an appointment. However, my major concern is if I am not given an appointment by May 1 (which is when most of my safety/ backup schools require decisions by), I will either end up committing to a school before I receive any notice on a decision by the academy or end up not having a school to go to If I don't receive the appointment by Kings Point and decide not to commit to any other university/ college. I'm just here voicing my concern, however, I am curious if anyone else has run into the same issue?

I'm curious as to how long your medical status was "Under Waiver Review". DS is in the same boat but is still waiting for medical waiver.

DD is a recruited athlete and has been on hold status for a few weeks. We paid the deposit at her plan B and she's making plans for that option just in case.

I sent the requested remedial documents that they wanted so they could try and grant my waiver, after my status changed from "Waiting Receipt of Remedial Documents" to "Under Waiver Review," It took 7 - 8 days to hear back and see that they had granted me the waiver in my DoDMERB portal and by the end of the day it this was also reflected in my USMMA portal.

Just note - I never received an email notifying me of being granted the waiver, which is odd because every time I had a status change in DoDMERB I got an email alerting me about a new correspondence. I just so happened to be looking through my portal and saw that the waiver was granted.

Thanks for the info. DS has been "Under Waiver Review" for over 2 weeks now and so far no AMI requests.

I know I went ahead with my Plan B (even to the point of securing financing) before I got my appointment, but I did get the nod in February or March, I think. It was a long time ago.

May 1 is the cut-off day for all principal appointments. The reason that this is the date for KP is that all other Academies use the same date. On May 2, KP will send out appointments for all the principals that turned them down. My advice is to wait until May 2 and see.

I would pay your deposit to your backup school on April 30. If you receive a subsequent appointment to KP, you can request a refund. Some schools will refund your deposit and some will not, but it is a relatively small price to pay in case you do not receive an offer or in case you are injured and cannot attend KP. Good luck.

DS is still on hold (2 months) after being cleared from a medical waiver and submitting his transcript a second time when Admissions indicated they had not received it.

I am an actively sailing alumni from '97 and am having a heck of a time getting information to assist / support his and another candidate from SC. Supposedly there are four slots, and 4 qualified applicants from SC, but Admissions has only offered LOAs to two applicants. Both students are high school sailors and are interested in sailing for the Varsity Dinghy Team. They have had contact with the coach, but it is unclear if they are being recruited.

I have been informed that target recruitment numbers have been lowered from 280ish to 250ish, which is very concerning as an alumni and an actively sailing Captain in the Merchant Marines. I have witnessed first hand the shortage of qualified mariners in the industry and am increasingly concerned about the ability of the United States to man its reserve fleet in a a time of war or international crisis. Additionally, the new Admiral for the school has indicated that recruiting is down due to poor PR for the school.

I am not here to rant for my son's application. I am here to push all of you who are on hold to do everything you can to tip the scales in your favor. Write a followup to the Admissions Office. Contact your representatives and get them to advocate for you as a nominee. If you are in a sport program, contact the coach or athletic director at KP and advocate for yourself. If you want to go to the Merchant Marine Academy no is the time for you to fight for what you want the most.

When I applied to King's Point in 1993 I did so for what, to me, were all the right reasons. I was an average student and I got in a bit of hot water that the school was made aware of my senior year. I was accepted two weeks before Indoctrination began. I do not wish that challenge on anyone, especially those that are fully qualified and ready to attend a very challenging school that is filled with opportunity and reward.

Best of luck to all and if anyone reading has advice to offer, we are all listening.

Perhaps they are targeting a smaller number this year to account for set backs? Hope your DS hears good news soon!

hello, same boat here. My whole application is complete and currently seen as “ready for review”. i got in touch with my counselor at USMMA and told me that my application is currently getting looked through. Hopefully decision comes out soon before needing to deposit for a back up school.

Many still deposit for backup school. It's a cost-benefit analysis. If you break a bone before indoc you are out, as an example.

The question about whether or not to send a deposit to a civilian school while waiting on a SA comes up every year. I would not tell anyone what to do. I do, however, recommend doing what you feel is best for you. Do not consider the "feelings" of the university. They studied at the Bernie Madoff Institute of Morality, Ethics, and Decency. I've attended as an undergraduate, graduate, and professional student and have seen many ways they relieve one of every sou possible. A DS did a 3/2 engineering program at a small liberal arts school and a large university (both considered "elite" on the food chain lists) and was robbed and extorted by both. Some schools will give your money back, some will hold your acceptance for 2 years if attending a SA, and some will send you hate mail. Do what floats your boat.

Just a heads up for anyone waiting. The May 1st deadline is going to be extended to may 15th.

are you saying the deadline for USMMA is extended to may 15th?

Yes, that's correct. Currently, less than 180 candidates have accepted their appointments. If they stick to the May 1 deadline they will not have enough PC's for the class.

Understand that state slot allocations only apply to offers made prior to 1 April each admissions cycle. After that date, they do not have to follow that guidance in an attempt to meet the target yield for the cycle and can pull from anywhere to get bodies in slots.
My post on the topic has more info

Got it. currently I’m still on hold, so I assume there is still a chance for a possible appointment. currently do not have one, still waiting for a response.
