What are the advantages/disadvantages to reporting to I-day on a government issued ticket? What are the advantages/disadvantages of reporting to I-day with our parents? Thanks!

Keeps money in your pocket, usually easier and less costly to change flight if needed. My daughter took the G ticket out and it worked great. I think I read something that they provide one ticket out and one ticket back at some point. Don't know how the one back works...

I have not heard of them providing a ticket back home for any reason.

If your parents are flying out there also, they can book their own fares on the same flights that the Air Force provides for you. If your parents will be driving you there, the Air Force will reimburse them for mileage for the trip to Colorado Springs in lieu of providing air fare.

Oh; they DEFINITELY PAY for a ticket back home...... But you DON'T WANT THAT TICKET!!! "You shouldn't have to ask what I mean"

Thanks Christcorp. I guess I wasn't even thinking about that situation. Nope, you don't want that ticket.

Flipngirla, going to I-Day on your own is a big decision. Watch a few AOG videos and decide. It was an easy choice for us, I didn't want my son getting on the bus thinking about his mom crying. I knew I couldn't hold it together and his dad and I decided it was best. He told us at parents weekend it was the right decision. He met up with a few friends and they went through inprocessing together, giggled on the bus together and silently supported each other on this very big day. If you are an athlete look on the boards for others to meet up with. Whatever your decision make sure you are the one who makes it. There is a ton of support for your family on the internet, they'll be fine!

Actually it depends....you do want the ticket after 4 years. They pay for your ticket "home" whether that be if you get kicked out or form 34 early, but that also means they pay for the flight you take to go back home after graduation!!!

Uh...
What are you talking about?

I do believe Christcorp was referencing something completely different than an airline ticket after Form 34ing...

rule of thumb. i like free stuff. use it when you can...

Thanks! If you take the goverment ticket do you stay with a host family? How does that work?

you do the bed and breakfast program, they might or might not be your sponsor's in the long run, though they can be. i and my bed and breakfast family requested that and it all worked out :thumb:

having your parents there or not just depends; i didn't because it was easier to deal that way.

The appointee is not automatically enrolled in the B&B Program. You have to sign up for it separately, and a host will be assigned to you. This host has no effect on who eventually be your sponsor family, since there are hosts who are not sponsors, and sponsors that are not hosts. The only way to get your host to be your sponsor after basic is to specifically request at the sponsor program booth before inprocessing.

Not necessarily. Put it this way, sponsor families are really just families your close with and get invited over their house. Nothing about it has to be official. I think i am actually registered under a different sponsor, but my bed and breakfast family invited me to come over when ever i felt like it, so i just go to there house on sundays, even though its not official. you can go to any friend's sponsor house as well. you really dont have to request them to be sponsor, just get their phone number

My sons used the G ticket, and AFA booked them on two different flights, both leaving in Dallas for the second leg at the same time. We paid the $25 to switch one kid to the other flight so they could fly together. There were no problems at all. Once they were on the Dallas-COS flight, the guys reported there were only maybe six people on the plane who were not incoming cadets. They had a BLAST on that flight!

Each cadet is officially assigned/registered to one sponsor family. Sure, every cadet is free to visit other sponsors, but then it would no longer fall under the sponsor family pass. In other words, it's no different then visiting a random person in C Springs - there's nothing stopping you from doing that, but they are not your sponsor.

hey everyone, sorry if i'm hijacking this thread in anyway, but i chose "providing my own transportation to USAFA" for i-day because of the uncertainty with my graduation (now i know that i will be leaving CA before june 23...)

is there anyway to call/email and change to a gov't flight? because i like the sound of fencermother's sons' flight

You can contact them directly and see if they'll change you. It's still fairly early so maybe it won't be too much trouble.

My kids were picked up at COS by their sponsor family; they were not part of the bed and breakfast program. Their sponsor dad took them to I-day the next morning and stayed with them as long as I would have (though didn't bawl and embarrass them as their mother would undoubtedly have done). They still see their sponsor family on a regular basis, and the sponsors of their friends and roommates (who happen to live closer to ski slopes). I can't say enough about these saintly people, the sponsor families. WONDERFUL!!!!

Not necessarily, if you go over any sponsor's house. you can use your pass....as far as my AOC has told me
