It sounds to me like this Navy board went much like the last AFROTC board. VERY highly qualified candidates, many with noms to SA's not getting a scholarship. This process has been long and stressful and I am truly sorry to see so many with such potentional being turned away.

I hope those appts to SA's come thru for everyone!!! Just to have gotten a nom says so much for who you are and the amazingly bright future ahead of you!

NROTC

My d and I met with the NROTC commander at Duke this week and he informed her that only about 600 NROTC scholarships are going to be awarded this year. I don't know if that was tier 2 scholarships or all 3 tiers. I'm guessing either because of budgetary reasons or future projections of officers needed.

Did he mention how many scholarships were give last year or the year before? 600 doesn't sound like a lot but unless you can compare it to what is "normal", it is hard to determine whether it reflects much of a reduction.

-600

He said typically about the same as the USNA. 1200 give or take.

http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=49528 Interesting article addressing just this topic. If he is correct and they are only going to offer 600 scholarships that would be an almost 75% reduction from last year (2800 to 600). The article states about 1200 were accepted last year which does compare to the 1200 from the Academy.

Wow. Tough year to be a young wo/man trying to secure ANY of the ROTC scholarships. Army, Navy & Air Force seem to have ALL cutback substantially on the numbers.

We had an appointment with an Army Reserves recruiter yesterday. He said their budget was cut by 50% on everything. We asked when that happened, and the answer was when the new administration took over. They were actually having their phone lines taken out of the building to cut costs. He said last year there were $20,000 bonuses for joining the Reserves. This year you might be offered $500-$1,000. Not only was their budget cut, but the Reserves enlistment is almost full.

So I agree, it appears the military as a whole has decreased what is being offered right now.

Wow, that's pretty shocking to hear. Defense shouldn't be where they're cutting back now.

How many AFROTC scholarships were awarded, compared to last year?

Not sure about the other branches,

But, Army is at 110% capacity for the last year. So, cutbacks are evitable, regardless of who's in office. When the economy goes south, the army numbers go up.

psu nrotc

I wondering what you need for ACT/SAT scores, GPA, class rank to get a NROTC scholarship to PSU. Please share!

My son got his rejection letter from NROTC today. We're a bit shocked, to be honest.

He has a nomination to the Naval Academy and received a letter from them last week saying that he's still in the running for an appointment, so we're hoping that works out obviously.

Luckily we've got a number of large academic scholarships including one full-ride to fall back on if need be.

I'm just stunned.

:frown: HappyCamper - I'm so sorry your son had bad news! Fingers crossed for USNA, and congratulations on the other excellent scholarships he's received. That is something he should be very proud of!

The Navy plans to offer 2,615 scholarships in order to yield a target of 1,050 Navy-option freshman enrollment for the 2010-11 academic year. This may or may not represent a reduction from last year, depending on whether Marine options were included in the 1,250 freshman enrollment number reported for 2009. In any event, it does not appear that the scholarship levels have been slashed. It is almost certainly the case that there is a higher level of applicants, both in terms of quantity and quality, so it is no surprise that the process is so competitive this year.

That number certainly looks better than the 600 that was spoken of earlier. Still, it is obvious this is a highly competitive year to attain a scholarship based on the stats of those who have not been successful so far.

I received the full 4-year NROTC scholarship but I just accepted my offer of appointment to USMMA so that will end up going to someone else when I turn it down.
