Wanted to get son, class of 2014, a watch as a graduation present. Any cadet or other in the know have any suggestions for brand and/or complications which would be most useful? I wanted to get him something nice, but not too nice understanding that it will get some rough use over the next four years. Thanks for any input.

breitling for pilots but they are pricey. TAG has some rugged waterproof watches

Casio G-Shock Atomic Solar...

I have one and it is amazing:
http://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Shock...r_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=watches&qid=1266855690&sr=1-2

Pros
-Never have to change the battery (Solar powered)
-Never have set the time after the first time (Atomic)
-The face will not scratch
-Waterproof
-Almost impossible to break

Con
A little bit bulky if you aren't used to wearing a watch. I never used to wear one, so this took a couple weeks to get used to, but now I love it.

I believe they sell these at KMart for like $60.

Very nice idea for a graduation gift :)

Any other suggestions? Is there one type that most cadets wear?

I was just thinking about this.

Would you recommend a digital or hand watch?

or two watches... nice analog for blues, and digital for ABUs. works for me

We got my son this at Christmas, he never wore a watch before, but LOVES this one! We got it at Sams Club, for $100, but saw it last week at Costco for $60.

These are all great ideas. The Breitling idea he'd love, but a little too nice for this point in life; maybe in 2014?? Anyway, thinking Tag Heuer aquaracer as they have sapphire crystal and 300m water resistance; but was at Costco this weekend and saw a Suunto that had a GPS in it, as well, I think, a compass, altimeter, and barometer. Seems like those instruments might be useful, but maybe not so much. Thanks for your thoughts.

I also use the Casio, and have been using it for several years now. I would definitely not get a nice watch, since they can get beat up pretty bad, especially during fourth class year.

I have this watch and its nice, but not as durable as you'd think. I wore it for a year or so and the band got white powdery stuff on it and one day after playing backyard football with it, the band fell off. and apparently, it is irreplaceable. :( but before that i loved it :D

Are there any restrictions as to what types of watches you can wear with blues? If so, how often are cadets wearing blues as opposed to ABUs? I want to get a watch that I can wear most of the time at USAFA, thus I want to make sure it fits uniform regs (if there are any for watches?) Thanks.

I know in AFROTC it needs to be a black watch. I am not sure if this is my Detachment specific or if it is Air Force wide. I would definitely get a conservative (black or brown) watch, nothing too fancy.

The current Air Force reg states that the watch must be conservative. Any watch that isn't oversized and doesn't have crazy colors will be fine. Most wear metallic, classier watches in blues and digital in abu's. I have both types, but like I said the only limitation is it must be "Conservative" vague I know.

Thanks all for the help. I decided to get appointee/son a Casio pathfinder that has a compass, barometer, and altimeter in it (tells date and time too!) Water resist to 100m. On line they were right at $200, but Kohls had a sale of 25% and had a coupon for 30% more off, so it ended up being much less than online. Plus easy returns if he doesn't like it. 30% ends today. Nope, not a shill for Kohls just passing it along. Plan to get him a tissot for dress-up. Thanks again all for your help.
