AFROTC Board

Yes. At our house we are crossing our fingers and toes that we get good news the second week of March. Good luck to you if you are in the same boat.

We're keeping the faith also. Seems like the last board was brutal. She has some civilian scholarships, but they are not nearly enough. Lots of toes and fingers crossed in this household!

We're joining the club... This is our son's first shot at the board. Does anyone know how much weight the interview has on the overall package meeting the board?

My experience was that the interview had significant weight, even over all the parts. If you think about it, what the interviewer tells the board is based on actually having met the applicant. It is highly subjective and carries alot of weight if not officially then unofficially.

From my son's experience, he was told by the interviewer that it counted quite abit. They met for almost 2-1/2 hours and he told my son that he would give him his highest recommendation. It brings a face, attitude, and general sense of the candidate. Validates the intangible.

Interview

Based on our experience, I’d say that the interview is very important. My son was awarded a 4 year type two scholarship during that brutal January board. He spent over an hour on the phone with his interviewer. When it was over, he was told that he was the most prepared person the interviewer had ever interviewed. He was also told that he was a very promising candidate. What helped him to be prepared was doing practice interviews with a teacher and a retired military person. I have seen the posts of some very bright young people who had much higher SAT scores and bigger name positions and activities than my son did but were sadly turned down. The interview is big! For those thinking about applying, it pays to prepare for the interview.

Good luck to your son!

My daughter's ALO interviewed her for the AFA and he was also the designated interviewer for the scholarship, so he just used that meeting twice. They also met for 2 1/2 hours and she came away with a very good feeling. He also said she was a strong candidate. Here's to hoping!

thanks for the words of wisdom. We're keeping our fingers and toes crossed for this. It's the only way DS can afford to go to his number 1 choice. His interviewer told him "For what it’s worth, you did an above average job on your interview." So hopefully this will carry over in his favor. Otherwise, not much hope as his ACT and GPA aren't better than the people who were turned down at the last board.

I wish they could hurry up! I hate waiting. Although my son is the opposite- he's not got a care in the world right now. I don't know how he does it....

My DD can't go to her first choice after the academy without another scholarship. She's applied for a lot of civilian scholarships also.

She is also very calm. I think her philosophy is that it will all work out somehow! Whereas I'm the mailbox/DoDMERB/Status Update stalker!:shake:

Son has Interview Tomorrow

My son has his AFROTC interview tomorrow. I am very nervous, but he seems to be calm. I am crossing all fingers and toes that it goes well. He has already had his interview for NROTC and AROTC and both went well. He felt the AROTC went the best. It was his 2nd interview so I think he knew what to expect.

I am amazed at the caliber of applicants and find it very hard to understand why the NROTC/AROTC/AFROTC has not awarded scholarships to many that I have seen on here.

Good luck to everyone still waiting and I hope my son hears soon on these. The waiting is killing me.:thumb:

TTMOM, is it possible your son is interviewing for next years scholarships? I believe the deadline for this year was December 1 or at the latest January 1. Also, they have pretty much given out this years awards. You may want to verify this with someone, but I really don't think they are still interviewing for 2010.

The deadline to complete the application was at the beginning of January. Once the application is finished they will schedule an interview. My son't interview was Jan. 15th and this current board is the first time his app is being reviewed. There is one more board in late March so it is still possible they are still doing interviews.

I don't think they start next year's process until May.

Dec. 1
Last date for high school students to apply for the High School Scholarship Program. Note: Online application must be completed before forms.

Jan. 9
Final date to mail in all required paperwork (i.e., résumé, PFA, transcripts and etc.). Your envelope must be postmarked by this date.
I'm almost positive that this date relates to all of the forms that need to be sent in prior to the interview.

Interview Tomorrow

Yes I know we are very late for the interview. His PFE was completed very late (1st his instructor was sick then he was sick for 2 weeks). We had everything mailed by the deadline, but they were very backedup getting everything in. I kept checking the web site and finally got thru to Mr Scott and he was eligibble but the computer had not been updated. This delayed the scholl being notified to set up an interview. His interview is tomorrow and will allow and this should get him in front of the March & April boards.

Wish us luck :thumb:

TTMOM - Don't worry. My son just had his interview 3 days ago and it was definitely for this year's scholarships. I suspect that certain areas of the country just had more applicants and started running behind on their interviews. Good luck!

Thank you. Good Luck to you too!

It's all new to us and the waiting is driving me crazy. At least I know I'm not alone. :shake:

My daughter got the news that she will be receiving a Type 2 scholarship! Her JROTC CC told her this morning. Nothing has appeared on the website or DoDMerb yet. No letters or phone calls either. I'm not sure how he found out so early, but I'll be really happy when she has a letter in hand.

We are allowing ourselves a celebration, though!

Good luck to everyone else. I know this has been an anxious year!
