I will be applying to both West Point and the Naval Academy..

Besides requesting initial paperwork from the Academy, what else needs to be done? Do I have to submit a long application like I have to for the Naval Academy?

Also, I attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar and my squad leader said I got a really good recommendation from her..does the Seminar hold any weight in the decision?

Yes, the Summer Seminar does hold weight in the admissions process. If you did well there, the admission's board will take that into consideration. When were you there? I was 1st week, and I loved it. I know that West Point takes the Summer Seminar into consideration a lot. I'm in the process of applying as well, so good luck, mdlax.

oops i didnt read this well enough. I was at Navy's first session of summer seminar. 2nd session at West Point

The squad leader's recommendation puts a up close and personal observation on a "file." While your file tells what you have done, so far, the recommendation gives them a glimpse of the person in question.

I was told it did carry much weight.

You wait for the application to become available - in the past they were paper based and a packet was sent late August.
The USMA application is fully online this year - which is much easier but I am not sure how it will work - perhaps they will make it available in late August.
Did you get your USMA signon and password yet?

The applications are similar but there are differences. You are applying to two different organizations and they don't share information - (except DODMERB and CFA).
USMA requires essays - last year they required 3 and the topics change from year to year.

Don't take it literally, but I heard from someone that attending the SLS and getting a good squad leader recommendation is like adding 200 points to your SAT score for the Admissions office. i.e. it has substantial weight that can help you get in.

Also, I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but USMA and USNA applications are two separate entities. You have to repeat everything you do for each one.

Where did you hear this? SATs are one of the most important parts of the application and a 200 point differential is huge. While SLS is an important chance to be observed, to give a squad leader's subjective grade this amount of importance is, to me, irreconcilable.

If we cannot take it literally, maybe we shouldn't post it.

I'm not sure what is rumor and what is true, but perhaps doing well at SLS adds to the Whole Candidate Score?

(Sure hope nobody quotes "momoftwins says if you get into SLS and do well you'll automatically get a whole bunch of extra points and then get an appointment) I'm really just guessing.
