I was told that the on-line application would be up today. Has anyone received an invitation (after registering) to apply today?

I just check my son's email-nothing. Someone stated on a previous thread that the AIM packs are being mailed this week but you have to reg. online to receive the package.

To receive more information about the AIM program, including a personal invitation to apply, please register today.

Applications will not be available online and will only be open to registered juniors
.

This step is required to receive the AIM invitation.

Subject: US Coast Guard Academy AIM Application

Dear <FirstName>,

I hope you are looking forward to applying for the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) Summer Program. We are finalizing our online application this week and plan to send your personal invitation to apply next week. While you’re waiting, I would recommend you request an official transcript from your guidance counselor and begin thinking about the personal statements that you’ll need to write. The personal statement prompts are:

Why do you want to attend AIM and what are your expectations for the program?

Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty are the Core Values of the Coast Guard. Explain what these values mean to you.

Thank you for your continued patience. If you have questions specific to the AIM Program please contact me directly. If you have other questions regarding the Coast Guard Academy, please contact your Admissions Officer. Admissions Officers are assigned by state and their contact information can be found by using this link: http://admissions.uscga.edu/i2e/academy_admission/Locater2.asp

Sincerely,

Lindsey Seniuk

I must say, the application is a little confusing. Who could I PM for guidance here?

Good luck AIM applicants! I attended Week 2 last year and I cannot tell you how valuable the experience is. AIM will really show you if you want to attend the academy or not (while making awesome life-long friends). Even if you feel like hell the first day, stay the entire week :shake:.

You can always email AIM@uscga.edu - what part is confusing you? Unless it's something of a personal nature, you might as well post it here...others could be having the same problems as you.

I noticed that after submitting the AIM application, my daughter’s application packet indicated that the “Recommendation Form” was optional for her.

What are your feelings with regard to having the recommendation form completed even though it is considered optional? Does having a recommendation in your file increase your chances of being admitted into the AIM program?

My understanding is that approximately 540 students will be selected to attend AIM. So, out of all the applications received, the qualified candidates are placed in a pool, and basically selected by lottery. Therefore, is it worth the time and effort to get the recommendation completed and submitted even though you feel that you have a strong application?

Thanks!

Yes.

A common misconception.

Admission to AIM is a competitive process, not a random draw.

AIM attendees are selected using many different criteria.

Hmm, my son registered at the website before the cut-off, yet did not receive an email or letter.

Is there someone we can contact to see if there was an error on the email?

Thanks in advance!

Okay, my questions about the AIM application:

1) Is there an area where you enter your actual SAT scores? Under the SAT section it just asked if I had special accomodations made when taking the test.

2) Under the section that says "Current Coursework" did I misunderstand or do I have to enter my tentative SENIOR year schedule? I see "Please list up to eight courses you are planning to take during your senior year in high school." but the section says "CURRENT coursework".

3) Under the Extracurricular Actvities section, what if I do not know who the advisor's information? Does the academy need their information so they could call my advisor and confirm that I am a part of the activity listed? If so, I should warn my coach/teachers xD

4) Under the achievements section for each of the activities, there seems to be a limit on how many characters you can use. Should I just list the awards that seem most important or is there a way to bypass the limit?

Whoever can answer any of my questions, thank you so much for your time and help!!

1) I don't remember. I would just say to continue the application and find out. If it doesn't ask you for your scores but you want CGA to know your scores, you could always send them an official score report.

2) I would say follow the instructions given by the application rather than speculation on the title's meaning. My guess is that admissions was trying to be consistent from the standard CGA application and the AIM application, so they kept the same title.

3) When I applied last year, I kindly asked my advisors if they would be willing to provide me with their information. This is just speculation, but I doubt they call your advisors except under rare circumstances and use it to make a more detailed resume.

EDIT- 4) You could probably send in a resume to accompany this section of the application if you run out of room.

This is all based upon my experiences last year. You may want to confirm with somebody, but I think most of my responses were adequate.

Good luck!

Andrew

I ventured onto the Academy website today to look at the application for AIM. After reading this thread it sounds like I needed to have registered to receive an application for AIM, however there is a link on the website that allows me to go straight to the application without registering. Is it a problem that I didn't register? I assume that the application on the website now is the same one sent to those who have registered. Am I correct?

Thanks.

Yes, it is the same application.
