USNA says DQ, but DODMerb shows Under Waiver Review

Hi, I received one DQ for USNA due to sleep apnea. My condition is extremely treatable, and on DODMerb it shows that I am under wavier review. However, in the USNA portal, it shows that I am disqualified. I am not sure, does this mean I am not going to be considered for a waiver at all? I do believe I am an extremely qualified candidate as a 4 year varsity athlete, top 2% of my class, SATS, and qualified for CFA. Is this the end? I am apprehensive to accept this right now.

Under Waiver Review shows for everyone that got a DQ regardless of waiver request status. USNA will initiate a waiver if they think your file is competitive enough and let you know. DoDMERB will reflect the same Under Waiver Review but USNA will show that they requested a waiver. From there you submit AMI as USNA requests (which you find out through DoDMERB) and wait for a decision. It's not over for you yet and your file seems solid so I wouldn't think it's over. Waiver grants do happen and if USNA wants you enough they will take on the risk (small as you put it) to have you attend their institution. Focus on improving your scores and ECs to better convince them to give you a waiver.

Any waiver depends on the DQ, current policy and precedent, and the candidate’s specific medical history. Some conditions are routinely waivered, some frequently, some rarely. Some depend on a time window - X months out of surgery. Some have a cap - only so many waivers for color vision deficiency are given at USNA in any class.

Thank you so much for the information. I was able to contact my regional admissions counselor about this, and he let me know that I was definitely in contention for a waiver based on my application, and I will just have to wait for the board to render a decision.

Does USNA actually notify candidate if admissions is pursuing a waiver? If so, how is that notification typically made? I know USMA notifies candidates if admissions is seeking a waiver, but I was under the impression that there was no way to know if USNA had initiated waiver unless/until it is granted.

Wow my memory is getting bad. Iirc - my son’s portal changed from under waiver review to waiver requested.

I wonder if the portal is different now. It just says "Disqualified", which is what it has said since DoDMERB issued its DQ a couple months ago. His status was changed to CPR weeks ago, but the medical is the same.

I never saw my son’s USNA portal. I did see the medical portal. Does the medical portal say anything?

Someone that knows better will correct me.

My son's says the same, however, USMA sent him a letter that they were starting the waiver review 60 days ago, and USAFA already approved his waiver. His medical has shown Disqualified on USNA portal since 8/1. Seems strange that those SA's would take action but USNA not at all.

My DS was DQ'd for color deficiency. His USNA portal shows Pending Waiver. It is dated 8/1. His USNA portal never showed Disqualified but his DODMERB portal shows Disqualified and states Under Review - US Naval Academy. The Academy Admissions Medical Team shared that our DS very likely will not get looked at for his waiver until February. They will look at all the color deficient candidates at once and make their decision.

My DD received an email from USNA indicating she was in the waiver process.

My cadet's wavier process was much different when dealing with USAFA and USMA. USAFA was fast and quick. Once all the records were requested and submitted, USAFA made a decision within a week. USMA took months.

You have to remember that each different service academy has different waiver requirements and allowances and that it is not one waiver for all. Not uncommon for one academy or ROTC program to be able to waiver a condition and another is not. Also, still early in the process, USNA may be backlogged and the waiver request will come shortly.

We have assumed that USNA moved on a waiver since my DS went to Under Waiver Review (in DoDMERB) for all SAs and then USNA requested AMI.The USNA portal changed to pending waiver under the medical portion.

I read that differently than you.

DoDMERB “Under Waiver Review” means the requesting commissioning programs have the file info for any DQs. AMI May or may not be requested. “Pending Waiver” usually means the case file is in the queue to be reviewed by a waiver authority, which can go either way or generate additional AMI request.

I'm also in the same situation (marked "under waiver review" on dodmerb, "disqualified" on usna portal). Would it be unwise to reach out to Admissions about any action I can take regarding the waiver (e.g. writing a personal statement)?

My application is complete and pending review for USNA, and I have heard nothing from the admissions office in months.
