Dear USNA Faculty and Staff and Brigade of Midshipmen

After interviewing a number of outstanding candidates, I have selected CAPT
Robert E. Clark II, Naval Academy Class of 1984, to serve as the 84th
Commandant of Midshipmen.

CAPT Bob Clark is a career submarine officer with an impressive record both
at sea and ashore. A native of West Chester, Pa., in 2007 he was inducted
into the West Chester East High School Hall of Fame. After attending the
Naval Academy Preparatory School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in
Engineering from the Naval Academy. He also holds a Masters of Science
degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Post Graduate School,
attended the Armed Forces Staff College, and completed the Air Force's Air
Command and Staff College Seminar course.

In 2008, Captain Clark took command of Submarine Squadron 4, the Navy's
largest fast attack squadron, composed of both Los Angeles and Virginia
Class submarines. Prior to that, he served as commanding officer of the USS
Connecticut (SSN 22), leading his crew to earn Retention Honor Roll awards
as well as a back-to-back Meritorious Unit Commendation and Navy Unit
Commendation. Please join me in welcoming Captain Clark, his wife Ruth Ann
and their two sons to the Yard.

With CAPT Clark's anticipated arrival we will soon say farewell to Matt &
Marylee Klunder and their family. We are currently waiting for the Navy's
announcement on RDML (sel.) Klunder's next assignment, and I anticipate that
the Commandant turn over will take place sometime in April.

With his outgoing and enthusiastic personality RDML(Sel) Klunder has set an
incredible tone for our Brigade,:thumb: increasing morale and esprit de corps, and fostering unparalleled excitement for the careers that await our midshipmen
upon commissioning. As a result of his efforts, under his watch the Naval
Academy has continued to succeed in its mission, graduating selfless,
inspirational, proficient, adaptable, innovative, and professional leaders
to serve our nation.

Please give Captain Clark and Captain Klunder your full support during this
transition and take the time to thank the Klunder family for their
commitment to service.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Naval Academy superintendent Vice Adm. Jeffrey Fowler

U.S. Naval Academy. As commandant, Clark will be responsible for the
military and professional development of the approximately 4,400-member

"I am absolutely thrilled and honored to receive this assignment and look
forward to mentoring and developing the future leaders of our great Navy and
Marine Corps team," said Clark.

3 Cheers for the new Commandant!

...a big hearty THANK YOU and Congratulations to Capt. Klunder! :thumb:
:groupwave:

Capt Klunder did a great job of repairing the damage done by his predecessors. The Mids will miss him. Wish him the best in his future Command.

Capt. Clark will bring a different style and the MIds will adapt as Mids do.

CAPT (now RADM (sel) ) Klunder is an amazing leader. He will be missed at USNA, but no one there will soon forget the leadership lessons they learned just by observing him.

Fair winds and following seas to the entire Klunder family!

His predecessor was not - ahem - popular with the Midshipmen or their families. For those of us with Firsties (seniors) and Second Class (juniors), she was a the center of a very loud debate about lack of food at USNA in 2007 and poor food quality. I listened to hours of bellyaching from my sons.

Anyone remember the infamous "Cod Dog"? :yllol:

The quality was about the same. The quantity may have changed though. Cod Dogs definitely necessitated plugging in the Foreman grill and having a PS3 party in my room.

A close second to "cod dogs" was breakfast of "biscuits and gravy." Except the 'biscuits" were hamburger buns, and they ran out quickly. So breakfast was a heapin' bowl of lukewarm, gelatinous gravy.

Beyond that, though, CAPT Klunder did a great job rallying Mids in many situations. I hope current parents will encourage Mids to drop him a note telling him what a powerful motivator he's been. While I usually think Marvin and other current Mids know more than parents can, I also believe it helps to be past your 30's to appreciate what a written "thank you" means @ milestones like leaving a demanding job.

The thought of "Christmas Fish" or some type of fish that has something that sort of looked like muti colored fruity pebbles sprinkeled on it still makes my mid rech when she thinks about it.

Sorry, did not know you were a Mid, or I'd have spared you the commentary on the previous 'Dant...

No problem, I was just trying to gather what the opinion was on the outside.

If I remember correctly, that was tilapia. Honestly one of the less terrible fish dishes, but it did look utterly awful.
