    USNA Varsity Swim Team Question

I'm not really sure about the exact answer to your question. My DD received LOA early but did not get her appointment until mid-January because she needed a waiver. I'm sure that it's case by case but I'll make a conjecture. Even some recruited athletes end up not coming to USNA for a variety of...

    USNA Varsity Swim Team Question

DD is a recruited swimmer at the USNA. The guys team may be different. While talking to Coach Rob over the summer, this exact issue came up. He said 4 or 5 walk-on swimmers are allowed to practice with the team during the plebe summer. However, when the season actually starts, usually only one...

    Army-Navy weekend

We're coming in from the left coast. When should we plan on getting in? The morning day before? The afternoon day before? The evening day before? I want to lock in the flight before the prices creep up.

    Army-Navy weekend

You are all digressing. Could you please get back to the OP and address where I can find more information about the army-navy weekend's events? Specifically, I'm looking for the boxing? parade? drum competition? Has anyone gone before as a parent (and not as a midshipmen) and want to share?

    Contact Lens

Thanks. That sounds like a plan. I'll have her talk to the trainers once the practices begin in earnest.

    Army-Navy weekend

Does anyone know where I can get a schedule of events for the Army-Navy weekend? The game is obvious but I understand that there are other activities. Any suggestions on how to take full advantage? I already got tickets for the game.

    Contact Lens

My question was from Tricare (insurance) perspective and not from the permission perspective since DD will use contacts even during part of PS when she is doing sports. Do you have your DD still covered under your family plan? If we take DD off of family plan and Tricare does not provide...

    Contact Lens

My DD is getting ready to head to Annapolis and we had a question about contact lens. We know that she has to go with glasses for the plebe summer. But how about the academic year? Can she purchase them through her insurance? If so how is that done?

Handy Reference for Everyday Word Mix-Ups

Language evolves over time. A secondary definition of "literally" is "used in an exaggerated way to emphasize a statement or description that is not literally true or possible." So, the people that you think are using "literally" incorrectly may be using it correctly after all, at least...

    Myopia Pending Waiver Review

After she was initially DQ'ed, more comprehensive exam (with pupil dilation) was scheduled with a specialist as per USNA request. The myopia was even worse than the initial measurements. However DD got the waiver in about 2 weeks. Hope that this info helps.

    Myopia Pending Waiver Review

I'm no expert on myopia waiver but that does not sound right. I know that waiver depends on the institution giving the waiver but my DD was granted a waiver with -9 in one eye and -8 in the other eye. If what the DoDMERB person told your DD is correct, then my daughter had -17 diopter. Either...

    Waiver for eyesight?

It's probably different for each candidate and even different from year to year. Just for information purposes, my DD received waiver with -8 and -9 diopter.

    Sports should not define Academies

I didn't claim that I should be the moral arbiter. I'm assuming that the USNA superintendent is way more qualified than I am. Talking with various parents who have a mid at USNA, I got the impression that teamwork was more important than almost any other factor at the academy With ~15% of...

    Sports should not define Academies

So you are basically saying that you are more qualified to determine what should and should not be included in meritocracy than the superintendent of USNA. Also, it's less than 1%. Way less. More like one in a decade. And I never said that they should not serve. I said if there is some way...

    Sports should not define Academies

Again, if a midshipmen is able to contribute in ways other then being on a ship or flying a plane (or whatever the service line) that is more valuable TO the Navy then they allow that. That is the reason that a handful of mids go off to medical school so that they can put in 12 years afterwards...
