    Dilemma

Did you try asking your English teachers for help in raising your ACT scores? Maybe they will help you out if you explain your goals and desires. I think many teachers would be more than willing to help out someone with goals like yours.

Current college student seaking admissions advice re: standardized testing

You may want to apply to the CSPI program. They pay you to go to your last two years of college (you just have to go to select colleges, not all qualify) and when you graduate you are a Coast Guard officer...

My son is struggling academically in his Freshman Year....

See this book for lots of info. about non CGA ways to get into the Coast Guard. http://www.gocoastguard.com/sites/default/files/uploads/ojak_17apr15_1.pdf It seems the best way is CSPI. The numbers for the other programs are much smaller than CSPI. Howard

    Question about career paths

Not sure if your goal is civil aviation after the service but most employers (airlines, part 135 operators, etc) want fixed wing multi-engine turbine time. So, all that heli time may not position you for a flying job post military... On the other hand, the intel jobs might position you for a...

    Computer Class

As an IT person I would agree with the other folks. Learn the basics in AP Comp Sci and get a foundation. The Cisco stuff is very specific and not something you will use in the next few years. And Cisco is just one vendor in the networking field and networking is just one part of the IT world...

    Going to Visit USCGA

When we did a drop off at AIM about two years ago we stayed in New London and found quite a few restaurants downtown, some on the water (which might not be a draw in March). Check out Trip Advisor. I can't remember the little cafe we had dinner in but it was quite good. For the pickup we stayed...

    Eagle

How about trying some rock climbing classes at a local gym? You might get over your fear since at a gym you can't really hurt yourself (you will be roped up and a spotter will be watching you. Howard

Coast Guard Class of 2019 chances

What about also the boxing coach? I know it's not the same but martial arts and boxing might be close enough that the boxing coach might be a good contact? Howard

In case you want to leave the USCGA

Yes, if anyone has any thoughts about the CGA you really should do the AIM program. Even if you decide not to go or don't get accepted I think you will find it worth your time and expense. It was a learning experience for my stepson. Howard

In case you want to leave the USCGA

If you are a Junior try AIM AIM is a week where you will get a good taste of what the summer will be like. My stepson did it and knew he wanted to attend but did not get accepted (hint, like the others said, don't go to TRY, go to succeed knowing that being a officer in the CG is your ultimate...

Homeschool student in need of advice/constructive criticism

In our school district home schoolers can join athletics at their local high school. Is that an option? Howard

    Backup options

See the website. There are several but you have to be careful in choosing your majors or schools. http://www.gocoastguard.com/active-duty-careers/officer-opportunities/programs Howard

Chances for appointment? Should I even bother?

A few suggestions... Just stuff we learned from a close, but, didn't make for this class applicant's family. Work with your admissions counselor, call or email every few weeks. Make sure they know you well. Work with the football coach, send him a video of a game or two, have your coach...
