Article on Getting into Service Academy

Are there any statistics out there about how tough it is to get in from different states or districts? I guess that stats might be different for different academies too.

Article on Getting into Service Academy

Oh yes, of course, my DS has been going through the admissions websites for the schools he is most interested in. I've looked at them some too. But that Kiplinger article goes into some other things and provides some information that isn't on the admissions websites. That's the information I'm...

Article on Getting into Service Academy

A co-worker told me about a article by Kiplinger about how to get into a service academy (link - https://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/college/T014-S003-things-to-know-to-get-into-a-service-academy/index.html). Has anyone seen this before? If yes, do you think it is good information? I thought it...

Interesting Service Academy Data: Numbers vs. Numbers

I wonder if a reason why Navy gets more interest is because they have chances to service after graduation in the air, sea or ground. If high school students don't know yet which one would be better (like my DS), they might look more at Navy.

Cross Country as a Team Sport?

Yes, that is a good suggestion. We actually thought of talking to the coach about service academies, but not for this year. Letting DS be on the team another year and see how it goes before bringing something like that up with the coach seems like the best approach for the situation. DS doesn't...

Cross Country as a Team Sport?

I think my DS probably won't be a team captain in cross country because he is not the best. He is OK and likes it, which is important, but there are already a couple other runners in his class that are way better. The coach puts the best runner every year as captain. That's how it was this year...

Cross Country as a Team Sport?

So, from the comments, it seems like it doesn't always have to be a team sport. Although maybe it is better. If that is the case, then cross country is OK for someone who want to go to an academy. How well he does would be more important it seems, which is good for my DS, since he doesn't have...

Cross Country as a Team Sport?

It's my understanding that being in team sports is best for getting into a service academy (either one). My DS joined his high school cross country team this fall. Does that count as a team sport? I know they run as a team and get team scores, but I don't really think of it as a team sport. I...

    Leadership development for a teenager

Glad to see these stories about "quite" children being able to be good leaders too. My DS is like that, but he does well in boy scouts and with church activities. He will probably be a eagle scout. He is only in 9th grade now, so he has time. He wants to do some school clubs too, so hopefully he...

Thank you. I saw the acronym list. It is somewhat intimidating in that there are so many to see. I also see some "stickies" for some topics but not for all of them. I assume that's right that they don't all have them.

How old should a student be for these events?

Thanks for the advice. So, there are cadets and midshipmen at these too? That sounds like a great benefit being able to talk with them.

How old should a student be for these events?

My son just started 9th grade. Is he too young for these congressional service academy events? Also he doesn't know yet which school he would want to apply to. Does that matter for these?

My son is showing an interest in going to a military college. He is just in 9th grade. A co-worker told me about this site a couple months ago and I've read some threads already. Looking forward to learning more, since my son's interest seems to be growing.
