My DS is a cadet in AROTC. He started college in Spring semester his freshman year because he went to NG BCT/AIT first. I’m wondering if there’s any benefit/disadvantage to commissioning in December vs May. Is Branching any more/less competitive if you graduate and commission in the winter?

Is it 8 years regardless of whether they were on scholarship or not? Is SMP/non-scholarship 8 yrs?

Have you checked with your state's NG to see what the educational benefits are? Each state is different, but several states will pay 100 percent of in state tuition. If you are interested in a state school, that benefit is the equivalent of a scholarship. And you can still do SMP.

Some states have an agreement that you sign when you enlist, and it guarantees you are not deployable the first two years of college. If the cadet is in ROTC, and they contract within those two years, then they would not be deployable until they commission. However, I don't know how many states...

Are there any ROOs that might have some insight on how cadre would handle this? Will they give him a warning? Or just boot him? @clarksonarmy

LOL, I say those words often (under my breath). At what point do you think the cadre would have that discussion with him? He didn’t start school/ROTC until this semester. They are two full weeks into the semester and I think he’s gone 2 of 6 times to PT.

I really don’t know, as far as the officer aspect. I do know he likes NG drill weekend and he is fine with the ROTC classes. I think he’s just being lazy in the assumption that he’s not contracted yet, so it really doesn’t matter. Problem with that logic is... he’ll never get contracted bcz he’s...

I have told him, and I will again... In not so nice words! It was so much easier when they were little and I had influence in the situation. Now he's an "adult" and I can try to coach him, but all he hears is the Charlie Brown "wah wa wa wahhh”!!!
