Advice for cadets seeking flight school post-grad.

Obtaining a pilot's license or not has little bearing on getting selected, in my opinion.

    Reapplication question

Need to? Nope. But I would highly recommend it. Coming from someone who was a reapplicant myself - clearly whatever she did this year didn't work. I would strongly suggest rewriting, and exploring completely different subjects for at least some if not all. I firmly believe it's what got me in my...

    Change of Major

I would pursue now, if he can. There's not generally a great time to do that during swab summer. What's he planning on changing from and to? If it's a technical to non-technical, they may not be too receptive to the major change.

    Housing allowance during grad leave?

What's your source on this? I never received a uniform allowance, and 30 days 100 percent is not guaranteed, and 30 days was absolutely not extended for any of my classmates.

    Housing allowance during grad leave?

You report within 30 days of graduation, generally speaking. There are certain minimum amounts of time that you get to PCS if for some reason you don't get 30 days, but if you do, the expectation is that some of that time is used to complete the PCS. No extra time is granted in addition.

    CGA First Assignments to graduates.

Also worth noting that for my class (and maybe since, but I'm not sure) request colocation with anyone they wanted, something traditionally reserved for engaged couples. The stipulations were that if you requested it, it was considered your top priority, and that both requesters were treated as...

    Places to go

Winter break was always home for me. Spring breaks included Iceland, Portugal/Canary Islands, and skiing in Colorado. Skiing in Colorado was the year that COVID started and they told us to stay for another week while they figured out how to teach online, so I extended my car rental, dropped my...

    Admissions Chance Question

I know it's tempting to try to gauge, but the only correct answer is nobody knows. Only way to know is to apply.

    Reapplicant's, what did you do?

Went to college, enrolled in ROTC, took a course load similar to what I intended to pursue at the Coast Guard Academy, stayed in good shape/improved my physical fitness, did a little bit of volunteering, and really thought about where I could improve my application - for me, it was by adding an...

Are cadets "students" for tax purpose? Also a question about "Saver's Credit" tax deduction.

I considered myself not a student every year for my taxes, and claimed the saver's credit 3/4 (I didn't have an IRA my 4/c year). Most Cadets can be claimed as a dependent for 4/c year.

    Flag day ceremony on Eagle

If it's anyone, then yes, it will be Alfa/Bravo/Charlie.

4/c at CGA. Ask any questions!

Just a point of clarification here: they can't have that stuff in their rooms. They can have that stuff and keep it in the trunk room. In fact, I would encourage it - they can wear civvies if they decide to get a hotel room/AirBnB one weekend, if they go outside of a 75 mile radius of the...

Does Pursuing a Commission Make Sense for Someone in an Undergrad Aviation Program?

While the slots aren't guaranteed at any point, as long as you are medically qualified, it is almost unheard of to not get flight school at some point in the Coast Guard. Unlike other branches, everyone O-3 and below can put in applications for flight school twice a year after commissioning. The...

    Swim Requirements

You're correct, it's about 10 feet - that's what I was refencing with teaching you to abandon ship, but I wasn't very clear. Lifeguarding is 3/c year as well - 4/c year is just regular swimming.

    Swim Requirements

It's been a minute now, but unless it's changed, it's largely just an evaluation of your swimming ability. Everyone takes a swimming class during 4/c year, but there's a more fundamentals-level class offered for those who struggle with swimming a little bit more. Additionally, you'll learn some...
