What personal things can be brought to Plebe Summer, and once confiscated, when can you get them back?

Things such as electronics and other random-ness not needed for beast simply stay with your civilian bag which is stored in an un-occupied room in the company area with everyone else's bags. After beast, all that stuff is given back to you just as you left it 6 weeks before. (:

Cell Phones, Contact, and Breaks at the USMA

After graduation, all "plucks" (rising yearlings) go to Cadet Field Training for ~4 weeks and then do a MIAD such as Air Assault, Airborne, Mountain School (if they got a slot). As a rising cow, you do a leadership detail for Beast, CFT, etc. and then any MIAD/AIAD you may have gotten for that...

Cell Phones, Contact, and Breaks at the USMA

You get your phones back after march-around/march-back during BEAST. As far as using them goes, just be an adult, don't walk while texting or talking on the phone outside, etc. During BEAST you can only write home and receive letters. However, at the end of Beast 1 and part-way through Beast 2...

    Computers at USMA

You can have personal devices here and use them as you see fit. I currently use my own laptop for classes, and several other students use Ipads to take notes with Apple pens. The only caveat is, in order to access your Microsoft services on a personal device, it needs to be set up within the...

    Is West Point worth it

If you truly enjoy it at your ROTC Det./Unit, I would strongly consider staying. You've done your time in a class system already, and USMA no longer has a leg-up in the branching process, only the posting process for '23 and beyond. Take this and the fact that you'd have to start over into...

    Walking On at the Academy

Hey there. About halfway through Beast 1 (the first three weeks, so about 1.5 weeks through), new cadets can opt to try-out for fall teams during the evenings. I distinctly recall T&F/XC doing their tryouts well into the academic year, too. Definitely get in touch with the coaches, though...

    Free time at West Point

You can put it down as a preference, but not many go each year as Airborne has gotten fairly backlogged, especially with Covid halting things for a bit; needs of the bigger Army prevail. Usually there are ~100 slots for cadets, so most end up doing Air Assault and CFT here.

USMA Service Requirement and Possible Grad School?

It's important to note, straight from the Law Dept.'s page in our Redbook, that their majors are not considered 'pre-law' nor are intended to be. This may change in the future, but just thought I should put it out there. "We do not seek to provide cadets with a body of legal knowledge or to...

Currently serving in NG, what happens if I don't like USMA?

Hey there. Based on the oath I signed, you would simply revert back to your previous unit and position to serve the remainder of your past obligation of enlistment. From my USMA 5-50: "A cadet who enters USMA from the Regular or Reserve Component of any military service and who resigns or is...

    Current cadet, ask me questions!

Not a question for you, Rhi. Just wanted to say: go cowboys :)

Service Commitment for Army Pilots to Increase from Six to Ten Years

For those of us in '24 right now who are eyeing aviation, it's ironically the perfect storm. With the increased commitment likely to stay, those who were on the fence for aviation probably won't choose it, and those who really want it have a better shot of getting it. We have an 8 year...

    Bikes at WP

You could definitely have a bike here, even as a plebe if you're in the right company and use it when appropriate (though I'd have to check the SOP again). My only note to you is: for the foreseeable future, your options off-post are basically none as a 3rd to 1st class cadet due to COVID and...

    ADSO in Branching Aviation

Not quite sure what you're asking, but the ADSO comes with the branch. Even if your graduation ADSO is 5 years active duty plus 3 reserve, that gets supplanted by the longer branch ADSO. Hence, now a bunch of firsties who wanted to branch aviation are now left in a decision limbo.
