University awarded scholarships and AROTC tuition/fees award

Just one add on come tax time. Generally academic scholarship money used for room and board is taxable.

    NROTC Scholarship & USNA Appointment

It is not necessarily true that if they get hurt, they are omitted from both. If an injury requires a waiver, I believe that waivers can vary between USNA and NROTC.

    Weird Camo kid

I had 2 sons in NROTC and neither of them roomed with someone from ROTC each of their 4 years. It's important to maintain a variety of friend groups. My DSs had their ROTC friends, dorm/roommate friends, intramural sport friends, study buddies. It's important to be well rounded. None of my...

    Missing classes

I can speak to NROTC. My DSs had to miss classes on Friday for Naval Leadership Weekend every year and when they had to go to Great Lakes for their commissioning physicals. Professors are more than supportive and they always have classmates to review what was covered. Only challenging if an...

Did my DS lose his award or am

My DS didn't show blood in urine when he made it through DODMERB, however it showed up during commissioning physical. After numerous trips to Great Lakes and numerous tests to rule out cause, they concluded that there was no medical reason, most likely exercise induced. That's why they tell...

    Pilot Qualifications

Keep in mind that you will be competing nationally for the available pilot slots, the number available dependent on the needs of the Navy. I've seen years where my DSs school had more NFOs that pilots and vice versa. From both my son's classes 2017 and 2021, they each had 6 and 4 pilots...

    Pilot Qualifications

I'm not going to opine on the standards, there are others on this forum more versed than I. What I can share are experiences that your son might miss out on and I'm hoping they serve as a means of motivation. I have 2 DSs that wanted pilot slots. DS1 is a helo pilot in San Diego. His...

    LASIK Question

DS had lasik winter break of 2C year so that he was ready to revisit flight surgeon when he went back in Fall to be retested. You are probably cutting it close.

4/C looking for advice on major

You've received good responses on this post. As much as I hate to say this, although persistence is generally a positive quality, there comes a time when you need to accept the situation in front of you. Your inability to accept that you need to remain in a Tier 2 to retain your scholarship...

NROTC - Pays for Tuition. But There was Rumor of Change to Pay for Either Tuition or Room and Board

Something to look into and I don't know the answer as it pertains to the NROTC scholarship, but in some cases if a scholarship is used for room and board as opposed to tuition, it is considered taxable and may need to be claimed. Again, I'm not sure nor am I a tax consultant...just throwing it...

4/C looking for advice on major

Just my opinion but I'm not certain you know what you want. You've dabbled in econ and enjoyed it...what's not to enjoy in Frosh level econ. You mentioned the Sustainability and Enviro major and that the environment interests you but you don't see career potential. I beg to differ. There's...

Interested in Notre Dame NROTC? Attend online informational Meeting

Had 2 sons complete the ND NROTC program as civil engineering majors and yes, you will carry overloads, but it's achievable. My son's were still able to juggle academics, NROTC, intramurals, and dorm life. You will need to commit to studying, sleep becomes a lower priority. But neither would...

    NROTC Acceptance & Scholarship Questions

Continue to perform a deeper dive on your research so that you are prepared once you know what opportunities present themselves whether it's an SA or ROTC. And if none of those come to fruition consider yourself blessed that you have an opportunity to attend Notre Dame. I will share the...

How do I line myself best up for success for an Aviator Slot ?

I would add, that even if you do all of these to the best of your ability, at the end of the day, it all depends on the needs of the Navy at the time of your selection, which is the item you can't control. Spend your time honing your leadership skills and becoming well rounded.

    Transferring to State School (AROTC)

As prestigious as the Ivies are, sometimes they just aren't the right fit. Many thought my son was crazy for turning down the Ivies even though he got in. He went to the school he felt at home at...the one that was the best fit for him. We never guilted him with disappointment, the decision...
