    GoSox Signing Off!

I will be starting a stint at USNA and thus figure that my occasional commentary on Service Academy Forums should come to an end. (Among other things, I need to be better about modeling working without online distractions!) This is a great site and has a lot of shared wisdom to offer...

Controversy of Cadet Group Photo -- Reactions from West Pointers?

Just going to say that . . . thankfully! . . . almost-2LTs are not the "leaders of our military." Nor will they be the "leaders of our military" when they get their commissions in a few weeks. Young officers and young soldiers make mistakes, and generally the military gets that the mistakes...

Controversy of Cadet Group Photo -- Reactions from West Pointers?

And I interpret this quite differently. Per the description of the investigation, some of the cadets worried about whether it would be an issue and another cadet responded with a substantive response that the gesture "isn't an [equal opportunity] violation." All would have been better if...

Controversy of Cadet Group Photo -- Reactions from West Pointers?

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/11/us/west-point-cadets-raised-fist-photo.html Follow up article from the New York Times. My own view -- as the guy who started the thread -- it would have been very difficult to conclude that an ambiguous physical gesture violated the prohibition on political...

Controversy of Cadet Group Photo -- Reactions from West Pointers?

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/07/us/raised-fist-photo-by-black-women-at-west-point-spurs-inquiry.html?_r=0 Read this in the NY Times regarding a faux "old timey" group photo in which black women cadets have their fists raised -- USMA now is apparently investigating whether they were engaging...

    Worried about running...

Good for you for focusing on this. Lots of great advice on this thread, including going to a real deal running store and getting fitted for good running shoes. Shin splints are common, and they are even more common for women than men, and even more common among women who are not built like...

Pat Conroy invited The Citadel’s 2001 class to his funeral; they made it.

Amazing story. If anybody hasn't read "Lords of Discipline" and "My Losing Season" -- you're in for a treat. Throw in "The Great Santini" and you're all set. Never seen anybody capture barracks talk/interaction the way he did.

USNA's sexual misconduct investigation of MAJ Mark Thompson

I feel like I read a different article than the one Freda's mom read (maybe I'm misinterpreting her position, or maybe she stopped reading early?). The article I read seems to show that MAJ Thompson had overplayed his hand -- he'd convinced a board of his innocence and was relying on the Post...

    Go Navy, Beat Army!

You are probably right (Army QB excellent and Monken seems legit), and in the abstract, for this to stay a rivalry, Army needs to win its share. However, in the moment (next year, with beverage in hand), of course, I will still be rooting for The Streak to go to 15.

    Go Navy, Beat Army!

Coach Ken staying at Navy -- more good news for the guys in Blue and Gold.

    Go Navy, Beat Army!

Also . . . anyone notice Navy has a 14-game winning streak? But I'll happily concede Army has about a 100-year streak in the marching contest.

    Go Navy, Beat Army!

Whew. Gutsy effort by the Army kids. Three turnovers and they still almost pulled it out with the Hail Mary. The Army quarterback is a good one, with Reynolds graduating the tide may turn. But not today. Well done, Navy football class of 2016.

    Go Navy, Beat Army!

Looking for Lucky Fourteen for the mids today. Good luck to Navy Football, including (but not limited to, as the lawyers say) the 15 out of 32 seniors who have service selected USMC!

Bravo Zulu. Worth losing a few points on the old QPR from the missed study time!

Sec of Defense to open all combat jobs to women

I served in Afghanistan alongside some brave and effective women Marines who helped our mission. There will be a lot of complications to play out, but I hope people do not engage in knee-jerk assumptions about the qualifications of individual women or make sweeping statements about some...
