I got disqualified from ROTC for an immune thing that is essentially a severe allergy (not to shellfish though). First of all definitely don't lie about it. That is just about the last thing you should do. If you lie about it and they find out your situation will become so much worse. I would...

It is not unusual to have to take 4.5 or 5 years to finish an engineering degree. This is because the Corps and ROTC classes increase the credits you have to take - I believe the MSIV classes in AROTC add 4 credits per semester. But it can absolutely also be done in 4 years. It just depends on...

Gregory Guard is the Corps' silent drill team. They perform at football games, Mil Ball, and other events on and off campus. Tapping (tryouts and selection) happens early in second semester I believe. You can also try out (or be voluntold) for your company's Eager Squad team in second semester...

The best advice I ever got in the whole college search process was - if something happened and you couldn't commission, would you still be happy at that school? And something did happen, and I'm still happy at Virginia Tech, and the world kept going. Best of luck with everything. You seem like...

First - I completely agree with what the poster above me said. I think a lot of it stems from the (perceived or real) reduction of freshman training/standards, which appears to be becoming an issue at the academies too. I try not to get worked up about it since those kind of things vary...

I did not apply to any service academies, I wanted some of the "normal" college experience and VT was more appealing to me in that aspect. I can see why the Corps would come off as less locked on than an academy. And I think the "normal" college experience plays into that a lot. Once you turn...

Yes it's definitely possible, reach out to Army if you are interested and they will help get you set up. Happens all the time. They will help you work towards contracting + getting on scholarship if that is your goal.

    Standards in Free Fall

I am a SMC cadet but we experience some of the same issues apparent at USAFA. Every year you hear cadets say "it's gotten way easier this year," "these kids have no idea what it used to be like," etc. There is some truth to those statements but it is a give and take between staff and cadet...

I get the smallest every year. If you run out you are able to add more money but I have never run out of dining dollars. If you are a person who likes to eat a lot and/or doing lots of exercise your mileage may vary. There are no mandatory meals where all cadets have to eat together. There is a...

I don't know if there's one single most important thing to do. Everyone prepares for college in different ways. I guess if I were to do it again I'd spend more time with my friends from high school and definitely more time with my siblings. I didn't really realize until a few weeks into school...

This information is correct but I do want to clarify that DCTC is a part of VPI Battalion. All cadets in DCTC are also in VPI. But yes, you do not choose your roommate. They will be assigned within your company. I have lived with cadets from every branch except Marines. Once you are an...

I would say that a 3.0+ is considered "good"/competitive in most majors. For engineering if you come out of the first year with a 3.0 I believe you are guaranteed your choice of specialty (aero, mech, chem, etc.) Engineering at VT is definitely very challenging especially in the first year. The...

I would say yes absolutely talk to everyone you can. Definitely want to get all the information before you make a decision. If he does a spend the night your DS will also be able to talk to cadets in all the branches and can get some extra knowledge from them.

The Army battalion is currently ranked the #1 AROTC program in the nation. There are over 500 cadets involved, you have great access and opportunities for summer training programs (I have friends who have been to Air Assault, Airborne, CTLT, etc., there have also been cadets who have gone to...

    Special Operations Preparation Clubs ROTC

Virginia Tech has organizations for Air Force special operations prep and Army Ranger Company. At some point during my time here there was a Navy special ops prep group, however I'm not sure they're officially recognized by the unit anymore. All have a challenging selection process.
