What is a good "hook" for the USNA?

Interesting - if this still representative, and USNA is similar, then a really good CFA score is comparable to all-american, and more points than team captains in two sports... Athletic Activity Level Points An outstanding athlete (All-American, 1st team All-Area selection in...

    Recommended to Retake the CFA

Watch your form. If you're training by yourself, you might want to take some video and make sure your form is good. It's easy to develop bad form with both pullups and pushups if training alone.

    Navy Athletics

SEAL Officers in the Field Something I haven't seen talked about much here. I've talked with a number of SEALs on different teams over the years, and my impression is that SEAL officers very seldom actually kick down doors. This is partly because SEALs often deploy in small (fire team) groups -...

    Still in the game

Or sometimes life is unfair You might also have a situation where a dumber-than-average, spoiled, rich, mama's boy who never tries hard gets a plum assignment that someone else really deserved because he's related to an admiral and two congressmen. Also a real-life example. Life isn't always fair.

    Injuries are driving me nuts

Take the time to recuperate You've got three months. If it comes to that, you'd be better off showing up out of shape but fully healed. Keep pushing while you're injured, or start working out again too soon, and you could work yourself right out of your appointment.

    USNA vs. NROTC

After college... You should consider the end game, just not college vs. Academy, but what comes after. If you don't like having your schedule mandated and like having free time, then you're probably not going to enjoy 5+ years in the Navy or Marine Corps. You will definitely be in military-mode...

    No Sports or ECs

Thanks, everyone for the input. I thought I'd get this kind of feedback, but wanted to make sure. I know he'd do well on the CFA - we've run together and he has no problem maintaining a six minute pace. I've also seen him do over 100 pushups and crunches and 40+ pull-ups in his martial arts...

    No Sports or ECs

Hi all, Passing this along for a friend of mine. Her son is almost finished with his junior year of high school, has a very high GPA - 4.0 unweighted / 4.7 weighted, 240 on the PSAT, 2400 on the SAT, 36's on the ACT, National AP scholar (all 5's on 10 AP exams so far, including Calculus BC last...

    Branch Differences

Another difference One thing that will never happen to an Army officer than can happen to Marines - a tour with a Quick Reaction Force, which is 6-18 months aboard ship. This can be stressful, not only because you're living for months at a time in a tiny space, but also because of a certain...

    Active duty to midshipman

Why not For me, there were a couple of issues not mentioned here - first, MECEP is relatively easier to get into (and there are fewer hoops like getting a nomination to jump through), the time in school counts towards retirement, which the Academy doesn't, the pay is whatever you were already...

    Boys State or NASS?

Try for CVW As stated by some of the BGOs on this forum, NASS is primarily a marketing tool for the Academy, with a summer camp type atmosphere, and going or not won't have any effect on an applicant's chances. Candidate Visit Weekend (CVW) provides a much better snapshot of life at the USNA...

    USNA 2018

The odds do depend It's a part of life - some are for, some against affirmative action, but your odds of an appointment are better if you can arrange to be a minority woman than a white male. As I remember from previous posts, chances range from about 50% for a white male who is 3Qed and has a...

What does the security clearance entail?

What they check Based on my own experiences, for the first level clearance, Confidential, they really just want to ensure that the person at the academy is the same one that applied (that your DD is not a sleeper agent). They check to make sure that there are no security flags, which might...
