    Questions on Re-Organization Week

Let me add how to address packages, whether sent via USPS, FedEx, or UPS (or similar): Cadet firstname lastname United States Military Academy 745 Brewerton Road #xxxx West Point, NY 10997 Where xxxx is their PO Box number. Don't use PO in the address as neither FedEx nor UPS will...

Do you need to buy your low quarter shoes or are they issued to you?

One other comment not mentioned so far: getting shoes/boots before hand not only break them in, but also get your feet use to them. Many new cadet candidates may go thru high school wearing onlyathletic shoes and/or flip-flops. The boots and shoes will surprise these folks, for sure. Wearing...

    Watches

Be careful with the band; this is a weak point with this watch. I know someone who has had to replace the band twice. To eliminate future failure, he now has a watch for the field, and another for everyday use. PM me for the details.

    Important New Information

Last comment by BigNick is a good reality check. Here are a few things that I think helped my son: Weekly update to his FFR and regional admissions officer of accomplishments; yes we viewed this as a "brag" email. This was suggested by the FFR. Observations about school work, projects, and...

    Academic separation boards

Compared to some of the other barracks, Sherman and Lee are quite modern and well equipped, but that's not saying much at all. My son is now in his 2nd year in Lee and with one year in between in Sherman. He says, "it is what it is..."

    Defense Department Budget Cuts

Congress has authorized West Point for 4400 cadets. For several years, now, the number of enrolled cadets has exceeded that number. My Class of 2014 cadet was one of 1387 that showed up for R-day. That was the year that a significant number of cadets had accepted their appointments; many more...

    Academic separation boards

It's important for your cadet to ask for help as soon as he realizes it is needed. Grades are posted almost daily, and most cadets will pay attention to their progress in each class. Help is available at the department level as well as the company level. Within each company, several cadets...

7 Ways the Military is Wasting Money

What Salon identifies is chickenfeed. If you want a sense of spending out-of-control, take a look at this story: http://www.tomdispatch.com/post/175627/tomgram%3A_david_vine%2C_the_true_costs_of_empire/ I don't know how much of Tom's writing is true, but if even a fraction, it is still...

    Is it true??

Slight correction, one is only guaranteed a commission when one completes all academic, physical, and military requirements and graduates. An appointment allows one to enter West Point; the rest is up to the cadet.
